nüvi 260w voice prompts

HI All. Just updated from my old street pilot to a nüvi260w. I installed the latest maps and downloaded the newer software (6.1 I believe)

I am getting a bit annoyed on how my nüvi announces street names. Streets that are abbreviated as St. are being called "saint" So for example 82 St. NW will be called out as 82 saint NW. Drives which are abbreviated as Dr. are being called out as doctor. So as an example we have a major road called the Whitemud Drive (Dr.) which my nüvi will call out as Whitemud Doctor.

I am very annoyed by this.

Did I do something wrong on the initial set up? How can I fix this?

Thank you and merry x-mas

Somthing new

Haven't heard this before. May be the voice you have selected might been formated in that way. try selecting some other voice.
Or try updating the software again.

Try different voices

For the most part, this is just how it is. The street names and abbreviations in the maps are not consistent from one locale to another. So the abbreviation of Dr. (with a period) may likely be determined to be Doctor and the abbreviation of just Dr will be Drive.

You will also find that the different voices will interpret the abbreviations differently, besides just the British or Australian accent. Most of us find it amusing and even a little charming.

You could tweak the abbreviation definitions with one of the Speech Doctor programs out there, but that's a slippery slope. Correcting Dr. to always be Drive will end up with that fixed, but also result in "Drive Martin Luther King Drive" when you actually hit a street named after a doctor.
