Slow Map Refresh after web update - Garmin 265T

Hi All,

I thought I'd throw this out and see if anyone had this problem.

I have a microSD card in with a ton of POIs ( I think I had it up to 118,000 installed on the card with multiple POI files. ). I do not install them onto the Garmin as a preference. Recently I did the web update for the unit so it updated the system software.

I am now experiencing slow map refresh that I'm driving past the point before it catches up on the map. Very jagged and jumpy. Taking the card out, the Garmin works as before.

I suspect:
Bad card now?
Bad POI from a recent download?
Bad update?

Steps I've taken:
Formatted the card once in Win XP with external card reader. Reload POI and problem still there.
Formatted the card using the Garmin 265T. Reload POI and problem is still there slow redraw.
Web update again - redid it - SLOW acquiring satellite and problem still there.
Web update again - redid it - Same behavior.
Formatted card with Garmin and only loaded 1/3 of the POI - Same behavior - slow map update.

What I'm planning on doing is I will try to eliminate the POI as the source by trying this:
1. Reformat card and leave blank.
2. Load only one POI file and try it.
3. Load in a smaller set of POI to see if it is one of those files.

If I run into a roadblock sooner testing above I guess I have found my problem in one of those steps? I'll stop my testing above.

But since this has been an ongoing process, I wonder if anyone has seen this or have a solution.

I'd like to avoid a reset and lose my favorites as a testing procedure. I'm thinking it has too many of those bread crumb blue lines from history as I've been blanking the history every couple months but maybe its overwhelmed?

Thanks all.

nope

Not having same trouble with a Nuvi200 with an sd card with no where near that many POI . Updated to recent software this week, after a previous firmware update last month was installed. No issues with speed loading. Am seeing occasional mandarin translation to the right of my English POI in recently found list, however I had that problem before.

Reset

I know you said you wanted to avoid a reset, but I think that would be the next thing to try. If you have Mapsource, you could save your tracks there, although I don't think there is any way to put them back on the nuvi. Maybe someone else will post a correction if that is wrong.

DorkusNimrod's hard reset procedure is given here: http://www.poi-factory.com/node/26136

Thanks all.

Thanks for the comments all. I printed out the reset info just in case I needed it.

I decided to just use the Garmin without the card but plug it in to search for a poi then eject it.

I wanted to stop troubleshooting it a while last week and let things go at that as it has been busy. But I'll go through my troubleshoot one step at a time to see. If I find anything interesting, I'll post for the general knowledge.

Thanks all again!

Another test..

Just in case someone has the same problem I've decided to finish my own findings as to add to the knowledge base out here.

I decided to check for updates one last time but only saw the option to redo existing voices so I tried that this time. Should have no effect.

Formatted the card with the Garmin and left it blank. With card inserted, the Garmin works normal.

Since there were a lot of new POIs, I decided to reload all my POIs including the latest ones that were updated in the last 2 months.

IT took a while but all 118,000 POIs went in with Express setup. Garmin seems to work normally but I wasn't looking at it enough to see as I did not have a chance to mount it on a short trip.

So everything appears to work and it appears to be a bad POI? Have to see.

Summary of steps.

Just wanted to clarify past steps.

Using the old POI's, I had reformatted the memory and it had no effect with/without using the Garmin.

I finally formatted it a final time with the Garmin and left it blank as a base to start with and the Garmin worked ok.

However in the time spent, I had updated my POIs from this site so I decided to reload it all to start from scratch. Surprising with the new POIs and starting from the blank memory, it seems to work. Did not go for a long drive yet to confirm.

So if I leave it as is and assuming everything works, it was latest POIs with cleared memory and Express settings. Once I play with this and anything happens, I will repost.

Still problems.

When I finally set it onto my dash and ran it for a trip, it was slow as before. Right now I'm running it to get location from the card then eject it.

So then it works correctly. Will have to try splitting the POI files in half and figure out what I think has to be a bad file. Hopefully in these weeks past, there will be updates to some of them here on this site so will post again.

About giving up...

Maps are still refreshing slowly but since I've been busy, have not had a chance to try all that testing again. I think I'll stay dormant for a while then update all the POI files again.
