alphabetic listing of POI'S on Nuvi 350

Hi all,

I have a nuvi 350 and put all of my POI's on an SD card. Up until recently, every time I downloaded new files (csv and gpx), they would load alphabetically. The files are listed as such on the POI loader but now when I pull up the custom poi on the 350, after download, they are in random order. Wondering if I have changed something inadvertently?

If you are veiwing

If you are viewing them on the Nuvi, then they would show according to distance from your current location.

If you arranged the POI in subfolders, then the POI lists will be alphabetical in each subfolder and seen as a group heading on the Nuvi.

Multiple .gpi files behave differently

If you are using multiple .gpi files, then the custom POI order behaves a little differently at least on the 350. The POI names (whether group headings or individual POI lists) will first show up in order of the date of the .gpi files they are in from oldest to newest. Then within each .gpi file they will be alphabetical.

That's at least with all the .gpi files on the Nuvi, I haven't tried using them off the SD card or both to see how that might affect the above order.

Sub Folder Order

Sub Folders do not appear in alphabetical order. They seem to show in reverse order of when the subfolder was created, not alphabetic.

I have subfolders listed as Business, Red Light, Rest Areas.

POIs show in the following order: Rest Areas, Business, Red Light. The Red Light subfolder was the last to be created.

The POIs in any particular subfolder, show alphabetically withing that particular subfolder.

The only way to correct is to erase the subfolders and to reinstall, in the way you prefer the POIs to show. I will likely do that soon, so that Red Light and Rest Areas to show before anything else.

I have a 265 wt and had a c340 before that.It didn't matter in what order I created a subfolder they always show in alphabetical order on my units. When touching a subfolder the name of the poi files are in alphabetical order.Once you get down to the individual ones they are listed in the closest location to you.

To test your theory I right click on my subfolders and went to properties to get date folders created and they are not listed based on date created. Not sure if this may be different on other models or the way I have my folders set up on the computer. On Xp set under view to auto arrange.I do remember a long time back that one model and it may have been the 350 that that was the case you described about the way they are listed based on date created but not sure like I say it will be a old post if anyone can find it.I see you have a 1350 so that also may be cased for that one to.Hard to understand a newer model being like that.

POI's

I have a Nuvi 350 & all my subfolders are alphabetical & within subfolders the individual points are according to distance from my current location.

Alphabetical?

The issue is not if the subfolders "appear" alphabetically. I totally agree that if you look at the subfolders, they will appear to be alphabetical.

B-U-T!! When you load the POIs into specific subfolders, and then look at them on your GPS, they do not appear in the same groupings.

I proved that again this morning. I had the following subfolders: Business, Personal, Red Light, and Rest Area.

I created these folders on the SD card in this order: 1. Rest Areas
2. Business
3. Personal
4. Red Light

When I went to Where To-My Locations-Custom POIs the POI files that are associated with each area where as follows:
a. Rest Areas Ontario
b. Rest Areas Combined
c. Kia Canada (In Business Sub directory)
d. Kia USA (In Business Sub directory)
e: Family & Friends (In Personal Sub directory)
f. Waterloo Red Light

This morning I deleted Business and Personal subdirectories; recreated them and then reloaded the associated POIs.

NOW!

a. Rest Areas Ontario
b.Rest Areas Combined
c. Waterloo Red Light
d. Kia Canada
e: Kia USA
f. Family & Friends

The display order has changed and it does not matter how many times I reload the POIs, or in what order I reload them. The display order will remain the same based on the reverse order of the creation of the subfolder.

Once this perplexing little quirk is understood, it makes it possible to have your high priority POIs to stay at the top when they are displayed.

I would be interested to know if this is a NUVI 350 quirk or is it common to other models.

It should be noted that the newest file is Waterloo Red Light Cameras. All others are much older files, so the creation date of the POI itself, does not affect this.

to be alpha or not to be

I would have to say it's a quirk for your 350. My 200 and 885 both list the files and categories alphabetically.

alphabetic order

Hey Folks, Thanks for all of your input. I will look at all of your suggestions and try to figure out my puzzle,

Don't know if this will help...

...but give this a try. Open your POI folder and then click on 'view'. Then click on 'arrange icons by', then click on 'name'. This will alphabetize all of the folders and sub-folders. Like I said, I don't know if this will affect the loading of the POI's, but it is quite possible that it will. (I do know that if I download a new POI, it will always put it at the bottom of the list.) This is the way that I do my 350 and everything is always alphabetized and in the proper order.
