POI Loader versus Garmin Trip and Waypoint Manager ?

I have a new Garmin 205W (Best Buy $99) and have downloaded the POI Loader. My question is do I need to purchase the Garmin Trip and Waypoint Manager as well ?

I want to upload POIs of course but I want to download points that have been saved on my GPS as well if possible. Can I do that through POI Loader or just by saving files after hooking the GPS to my computer ?

With this model I am not able to load a route so I am not sure I will get the full functionality of the Trip version of the Trip and Waypoint Manager but I do want the ability to move favorites or specific locations to my computer.

Any thoughts would be appreciated ! smile

With all the pois on this site ready for download poiloader will do the trick.Google Maps,Bing and Mapquest allows you to send favorites to your gps.Extra Poi Editor is one program a lot of users use and it has many functions.You may want to get familiar with it. http://turboccc.wikispaces.com/Extra_POI_Editor

but does POI loader......

......allow you to move files FROM the GPS TO the computer ?

For example, if you see a scenic spot while travelling and mark it, can you then move that location to your computer for use later ?

Poiloader is for loading

Poiloader is for loading custom pois to your unit.Several programs will do what you ask.Garmin Mapsource,Extra Poi Editor,Easy Gps and connect gps unit to computer and open up the drive and go to Garmin folder ,click on gpx folder and make copy of current.gpx and convert it.Just a few examples.

I like to use Extra Poi Editor.Under file you can select Open Garmin Favorites and it will transfer them.You can then add any additional information as needed.

If you have not discovered it yet.You can assign categories to favorites on that model.Use existing or make a new category.

MapSource

Trip & Waypoint Manager is just MapSource with a limited-capability map (basically just for looks). If you can talk Garmin into sending you MapSource either cheap or free, it would be more useful because it includes a routable map.

That said, if you just want access to your favorites, you can follow the above suggestions and either access current.gpx directly, or use one of the third party tools offered here.
