Charlotte - DC

To all the road warriors out there:

I'm going to be heading out on a road trip from Charlotte to Washinton DC. It's a 6.5 hour drive. but i'm gonna take 4 days as vacation. Any suggestions on towns/cities/sights to stop, spend a night and see? I'll be heading out thursday after work around 5 with my girlfriend, and i'm thinking about stopping by Fredericksburg, VA to sleep and look around. Then off to DC on Friday morning. I want to head back to Charlotte saturday afternoon and find a place to visit on the way.

Any suggestions?

Charlotte to DC

You might consider doing a section of Skyline Drive from Luray to Front Royal, although the leaves are probably gone by now.

must be Charlotte NC. Take a little longer and come straight up US 15. Set the GPS to do the shortest route from Charlotte to Frederick MD. 28 miles from Frederick is the Washington Monument near milepost 0 on the Ellipse.

Frederic MD is about 45 minutes from downtown DC if you are traveling in heavy traffic. I travel a good portion of the route fairly regularly and it sure beats the aggravation of traveling I-95 between Richmond and DC!

The Marine Corps museum

...in Quantico is right off the highway, and well done, on caliber with a small version of the Smithsonians. The Blue Ridge parkway and Skyline drive if you want a slower, more mellow pace, can't be beat.
