Copy POI from Garmin Device

What would I need and how would I copy loaded POI files from my Garmin c340 to my computer so I can load them into my other Garmin device.

Work loaded POI files into my GPS and I'm trying to copy them and install them on my personal GPS

.

You can't do it with that unit. The c340 does not present itself as a Mass Storage device to the computer so the data is not accessible.

You would need to get access to the source data and load them from that.

The C340 Manual

The C340 manual (https://buy.garmin.com/shop/store/manual.jsp?product=010-004... ) indicates on page 30 that the device came with a CD that you need to install USB drivers on your PC. Wouldn't that indicate that the C340 does then have a USB port and therefore would be seen as a mass storage device? Just asking as I have never used the 340.

Also in the manual it mentions that you can load custom POI files on the device but no mention of using the SD card for this purpose. I'm wondering if the original poster could use the USB connection to download the custom POI file, poi.gpi, from the 340 to his PC. If so he could then copy it to the Garmin/POI folder on his GPS or could use a program like GPSbabel to convert the gpi file to a gpx file and use POIloader to load the points to his device.

I did this on my Mac

I used Garmin RoadTrip to do that. Just use the Receive feature to load the POI's to RoadTrip from the c340, then use the Send feature with the other GPS's to transfer the POI's from RoadTrip.

Just realized Roadtrip is Mac only. sad

I sure would think you can do something similar with MapSource for your PC. I'll give that a try later with my PC.

The c340 does NOT present itself as a Mass Storage device to the computer.

The c340 cannot read Custom POIs from the SD card. The SD card is only for maps on that unit.

You cannot send Custom POIs from the GPS unit to MapSource.

So, I can't get data off my current c340?

For once

With Roadtrip for Macs. us Garmin Mac folks finally have something on the Garmin PC users. smile

I transferred custom POI's from my Nuvi 760 to Roadtrip, then using Roadtrip transferred those custom POI's to my Nuvi 255.

As I say I have never used a C340

As I say I've never used a C340 but the manual for the unit says:

"Custom POIs (Points of Interest)
Your c340 will accept custom points of interest (POI) databases, available from various companies on the Internet. Some custom POI databases contain alert information for points such as safety cameras and school zones. Your c340 can notify you when you
approach one of these points.
After downloading your POI database, use the Garmin POI Loader to install the POIs into your unit. The POI Loader is available"

So my question is, if as you say, you can't use the SD card to load POIs how do they get there?

The other question is if they can get there then shouldn't you be able to get them off or is the only option to use POIloader to overwrite the current POI file with a new one?

Custom POI are loaded to internal memory on the unit and, as MM states the SD card is for maps only.

Thanks But

Thanks for the reply but as I said:

"if as you say, you can't use the SD card to load POIs how do they get there?"

That's how do they get onto the c340?

Let me put it this way

C340 users never have to answer the question about copying from the SD to the unit. They load it straight to the unit which has limited memory. Custom POI are stored in My Locations >> Custom POI.

The next question is why do you think that custom POI can only be loaded to an SD card? POI Loader gives you a choice for some units of loading POI to either the unit or to an SD card.

Oh for goodness sakes.

The c340 connects via the USB and POI Loader loads the Custom POIs into the 2MB of dedicated space on the unit for Custom POIs.

THE UNIT DOES NOT PRESENT ITSELF AS A MASS STORAGE DEVICE TO THE COMPUTER.

There's no way to access the data via a computer. PERIOD.

SD card

I owned a c340 for over a year and as the others posters stated is will not show as a drive on your computer.Custom Pois are loaded to the unit by using poiloader. The sd card is for additional maps. The c340 is very limited in storage for the unit for custom pois 2mb.Thats it, so you have to be Conservative in the custom pois you install.Leave the icons out.You can also look at FAQ http://www.poi-factory.com/node/1265 for more info. You can use mapsource and Easy Gps to transfer favorites. Not sure about Extra Poi Editor didn't have the c 340 when I discovered EXP.Would think it would work also for favorites.

OK, that's all I wanted to know. I've said twice I had never used the C340 and I just wanted to understand how you loaded POI to the device.

Thanks, sorry if I wasted your time. sad

That's not how it's done!

You need to hold the unit between the thumb and ring finger of your left hand and raise your right foot EXACTLY 39.37 inches from the congruence of the tropic of Capricorn and the intersection of the shadow cast by the front paw of the leader of the pack while uttering the secret incantation.

Sounds so much better than you use POI Loader to load them to the unit's internal memory doesn't it?

Not that

I didn't think that custom POI's could only be loaded to the SD card. What I was attempting to learn was, if you couldn't put the POIs on the card and then copy them from the card to the C340, how did you get the POI's on to the device.

I think I have my answer now.

you can use the transfer option.

POIs go in, they don't come back out

When you run POI loader against one or more POI files (gpx or cvs format, or both), the POI loader converts all of the different POI files into one file in the internal format used by your GPS. There is no simple way to extract the data back into individual csv or gpx format files. While in some cases you might get away with taking the one big file that is created and moving it en-mass to another gps, this technique is not recommended and might not work in all cases when moving between different models.

The recommended way to deal with putting POI files on multiple GPS devices is to keep the original files and load them onto which ever GPS receivers you want to use them on.

You didn't waste my time, but I posted twice that the unit didn't present itself as a Mass Storage device and other people chimed in with the same thing, and you continued to question the veracity of that.

My answers were related to the ability (or lack thereof) of getting the Custom POIs off the unit and onto a computer, which can't be done.

I think this has gotten a little sidetracked from what I originally asked. What I'm trying to do is copy CUSTOM POIs from a c340 and copy them onto my Nuvi 785w

@krc1075

Not really. It can't be done as there is no way to access the file on the 340. It was discussed in "What's an SD slot for then?"

As your unit doesn't appear as a storage device, you can't access the file.

There is no way to do this.

If you don't have access to the SOURCE DATA, you are out of luck.

You cannot copy the Custom POIs from a c340 to a computer. Thus you cannot copy them from the unit onto a different GPS unit.

Sorry.
