Technical diagnosing of a POI issue?

So the guys on the NZ Open GPS Project have been trying to get a map with all of the street names set as POIs to load and be searchable on the Zumo. For some reason, it isn't working.

The format that they are using is like this:

;1030000198066
[POI]
Type=0x0100
Label=Marine View, Orewa, Rodney
Street Address=Marine View
City=Orewa
Region=Rodney
Country=NZ
Data0=(-36.58463540835,174.69547901665)
[END]

I've been unable to find ANY of these thousands of POIs on my Zumo no matter what "Type" they use. See this thread for more detail: http://gwprojects.org/forum/viewtopic.php?t=153&postdays=0&p...

I'm now waiting for the latest attempt to compile - they are assigning the POIs to every "Type" so that we can see if the Zumo will be able to view them from one of those categories.

Anyone familiar with this issue?

- Thanx

Observations...

If you load that map set into Mapsource - the "Find..." option is disabled -- it's obviously missing an index or somesuch. You can see the features embedded in the map data though (airports, mountain ranges etc). The map's not Routeable in Mapsource either...which would seem to be a much bigger issue.

If you turn the Zumo's GPS off and manually set location to NZ using "Browse Map", can you then successfully plot routes and get it to do a simulated journey? One of the users at gwprojects.org reckoned the Routing was working on his Zumo - so I'm a bit confused.

The copy I have is a few month's old, so the project might have moved on. But if not, it might function as a simple background map, with your rough location displayed on it (with no snapping to nearest road etc).

If they don't figure out how to generate the missing index before you go on your trip, you would have to load your missing POI's etc using POI Loader (which requires the data to be in a different form to one you gave above).POI Loader requires a .CSV or .GPX file as input (depending on the amount of detail you want to store).

Your post caught my eye, because I've been to NZ a couple of times - and even got to do a bit of motorcycling there :-)

My current project is turning a paper map of Malta, into something my C510 can use - so I'll pop over to gwprojects.org and see what I can learn !

NZ maps

Phil,

Thanks for the note. They also have autorouting NZ maps here:

http://mapcenter2.cgpsmapper.com/mapsetview.php?id=185

They are trying to create a map set that has POI data for all NZ streets - so that Zumo owners can search for a street within the Zumo. That's what that "NZ Street Centre POIs" file is all about...

Make more sense now?

The blind leading the blind...

They wrote:

A mapset of NZ streets as POIs for devices too stupid to do street searching

I think they might come to eat their words on that one ;-)

Ah - it looks to me, that having failed to get the map into a state that the Zumo (or Nuvi or Streetpilot) can understand, they've then produced some sort of transparent overlay, containing all the street names (but no roads).
So the data you reproduced is input to cgpsmapper, not any Garmin software.

I'll report back, when I actually know something :-)

BTW - Did you try the simulated routing? -- because until you're sure that bit works, the rest of it seems fairly academic..

Yep.

Yes, the simulated driving and routing work perfectly.

Regarding the other POI Street Centre Map... Now you are on it. That's EXACTLY what they are doing. The latest version of that street center overlay map just finished compiling. This one is supposed to have all of the POIs assigned to different "types" and unfortunately, the Zumo still finds NOTHING.

Really frustrating. I'll bet it's something simple...

- Thanx for taking a look at it!
