Arizona Mobile Speed Cameras, something different?

I just returned to Phoenix from my Phoenix-Las Vegas-Phoenix commute and saw the usual DPS Mobile Speed Vans on the 93 near Hoover Dam. This mobile camera unit was supported by a DPS marked unit that was actually stopping a Ford pick-up just before the Speed Camera van. I have never seen enforcement like that in all of my commutes.

On the other hand the other different situation was there were the usual yellow "Photo Enforcement Zone" signs on the Carefree Highway by Arizona Game and Fish, but there was no van to be seen. I think the operator may have forgotten the signs for whatever reason, but I was surprised by the lack of the van with the signs in place.

Mobile Speed Cameras

Should have thrown the signs away!!!

DPS also likes to position a motorcycle officer with radar about 1/2 mile past the mobile van to catch you when you speed up again.

Warning Signs

I have noted recently that some of the van drivers are a bit lazy and place the warning signs within 50-100 feet of the van, rather than the several hundred feet or more for the fixed cameras. Since they use radar, they are detectable, but the sign positioning is troubling.

I have not seen the second police unit near the van - I have a V1 radar unit that shows a count as well as direction of the signal. However, I have noticed in some states (not Arizona yet) that a single car shows up as 2 radar sources. I haven't paid attention if they are the same type of radar - I am too busy looking for them!

Mobile Vans in Phoenix and Vicinity

I too have noticed that the van warning signs on the I-10 in the Phx. Metro area are set out so that they are almost at the vans. Not much prior warning there!

I have a Bell radar detector and noticed that the signals put out by the vans both on the highways and in-town,are very weak. The alarm is not set off until you're almost at the van - better just slow down and then there's no need to worry. LOL

Listen to the tones. The V1 uses different tones for each type of Radar detected. I had fun with it on my trip from NYC to Memphis.
