Cradle problem

Need a little advise here on my problem I am having with my 760. The other day I had moved my beanbag mount from one vehicle back to my car. The next morning, I went and connected my unit to the cradle and the unit would not come on but if I touched or wiggled the power cord the unit would power up for a brief second then I would get a message that the unit was disconnected and if I wanted to keep on battery power. I know the power cord was getting power and the fuse was good plus and I was getting the traffic option in the menu.

I emailed tech support and they had me charge my unit via USB then let it run to see how long it would stay on running on the battery (which was about 45 minutes). I replied back with the info and a different tech replied stating was a bad power cord and to mail it to them to be checked and replaced which I did.

In the meantime, I went to Best Buy and purchased a power cord without traffic and tried to use it with the same results and emailed support and they replied cant open a new order while the current one is open.

Just wondering if the cradle itself can go bad just like that and is there anywhere I can purchase the cradle as I need the GPS for a trip next week and I don't think that I can get a replacement before I go.

check the pins

There have been reports of bent pins on the cradle connector. Have you checked those?

Pins

Come to think about it, I believe there was one that looked that it could be bent. I'll look at that on my lunch.

It's a mechanical connection

Since you've exchanged the power cord, you've eliminated the plug on the cable. Peer into the socket on the cradle; I needed to use a magnifying glass and bright light. You'll see a black plastic tongue lined with copper contacts. Look for bent contacts or dirt on one or more of them. If you see a bent contact, the best fix is to replace the cradle.

The design of this connection is fairly foolproof and not likely to be damaged, but a hair, bit of lint or something like that might be stuck in there.

Don't overlook the contacts between the nüvi and the cradle itself. Wiggling the cable would normally point to that connection, but the movement may really be at the 760 contacts. These are more exposed. Try wiping both halves with a lint free cloth moistened with alcohol or use a white eraser but be sure to clear away any eraser crumbs.

Thanks, I'll check that out later to see if that is the problem.

ebay

You can get a new cradle with suction cup mount on ebay for under $20 shipped:

THANK YOU !!

Went out and checked the cradle, it does appear that one of the pins is either bent or just dont look right to me. I did try and play with the pin and did wipe down both the pins and the contacts on the 760 and have it where it is working like it should be but on the touchy side.

Based on your experiences, when sending something to Garmin, what is the turn around time to get something back? I sent the cord on Saturday via USPS and they got it on Monday morning and will need it next week when I go on Vacation.

Garmin Turn-Around

In my experience Garmin have been very fast in turning around a shipment. I had a part sent for my MSN cable (the end pieces tend to break off) and I received in in less than a week from the time of my call. I also exchanged my 765T for a new unit around the time of the recall and received the new one in less than a week. I have been very impressed with their service and shipping.

Thanks,

Thanks, I know they got the cord on Monday so I am hopeful that it gets back to me by next Tuesday. I can always use my 2730 as I still have the traffic subscription on it.

At the moment, the unit is working with the cradle but is touchy at times where the unit is going back and forth from external power and the batery by itself when I hit the right bumps in the road.
