Initial impressions of my 765T (and the 265WT goes back)

Out of the box the feel of the unit itself was different. It's rubberized matte black compared to the grainy plastic of the 265. The outer frame is shiny black plastic.

There was no case included this time. The 265WT came with one. I'll return the 265 with its case and avoid the temptation of keeping it. I don't need any bad mojo. I'll go get a case for it at Target, Walmart, or TJMaxx. Sometimes they have something interesting.

I did the firmware and map updates. I think the firmware might have been current... web updater said it was, the website said it had an update. I went through the process anyway. Thought I bricked it for a minute there too... phew.

The voices and text-to-speech are much better on the 765 than on the 265. More natural. The voice choices say "speaks street names" under them, as opposed to TTS being included in the name of the voice.

I have not yet tried the bluetooth, or the lane assist. I don't see any 3D buildings being rendered yet. It'll take more fiddling with this until I get what it does.

On a side note: On the way home from a trip upstate using the FM traffic/power cord hooked up, the 265WT tried to send me on a route I didn't think was the best... I failed to understand that it did that because the route I wanted to take was riddled with a whole lot of traffic. I found out the hard way and next time I'll put a little more faith in the GPS. I tried to look at a broader view of the map to see if traffic was why it did that, but that's hard to do and drive at the same time. Next time I'll just go with it. All roads lead to home, after all.

Case for 765T

A couple of months ago I purchased a case for my 765T on eBay (current item # is 260466981838) for about $12 (including free shipping from Hong Kong). It seems to be leather (or at least a pretty good imitation) and the 765 fits well. It has a cover 'flap' that is detachable that protects the screen. It fits nicely in the mounting bracket without removing the 765 from the case as there is a cutout to accommodate the Nuvi bracket. I have only removed my 765 from the case to clean it occasionally.

Just in case you want a case that protects the unit and lets you carry it with you as well as use it while in the case. Seemed like a decent price (it is now an auction - when I bought it it was 'buy it now.' There are many pictures of it on the eBay page.
