I Buy 265WT, the 765T goes on sale. Should I spring for it?

The day after buying my 265WT from a local Costco for $219, they send me my usual email offers for Costo.com and it shows that they have the 765T on sale for $279, delivered. Is it worth the extra $60?

So far the 265 WT works well for me, but what is it I don't have that the 765T does, and is that worth 60 more, I wonder....

It's only MONEY

Hey,
I've blown 60 bucks on worse (bad dinners, video games I played once, you know how it is)...

I took a look at the spec lists side by side...

I think the extra features will be worthwhile. I hope, anyway.

But it's Costco.. use the two side by side for a few trips and see which one I like better, and the one I don't goes back.

Only you

can answer the "worth it" question, but for me, any one of these 3 features would be worth $60:
powered cradle, saved multipoint routing, lane assist.

Another feature I like is that it remembers the position when removed from the cradle. This can be useful in a strange city where it is easy to forget exactly where the car is parked. Change it to pedestrian mode and it will return you to the car. Lane assist is also nice where available. Takes the guesswork out of lane selection.

John B - Garmin 765T

does it really have a powered cradle?

that's interesting.
I think the multipoint routing is going to help.
And it's a music player I can use while I'm recharging it in my office.
I ordered it.
More new gadget anticipation for me! yippie...
I wonder if I can use the new map I just downloaded to update this one too...

Lane Assist

...is so worth it in my opinion.

I agree totally with the features you mentioned, plus the unit's ability to remember your last location making it easy to track down your car in a big parking lot.

I too just bought the 265wt

I too just bought the 265wt and am thinking of ordering the 765t from Costco. Would be interested to hear your impression of each when you get your 765t. (comparing the traffic alerts, touch screen, lane assist (on the 765t) etc.)

Thanks,
Carol

and it works really good, found my home location better and is faster loading I think you will like the 765

It's on its way

My 765 is in the hands of Big Brown...
They say it'll get here on Monday.

Today I had the chance to put the 265 to the test... I was told to meet a client, and the address provided to me was wrong. There was no street by that name, in the specified part of the city I was told I'd be going to. But it found a street by that name in another part, so I went there. Only the houses skipped a number and the invisible house it directed me to on that street was not really there. So rather than street, I tried AVENUE. So I went to the avenue and it was not there either. But the GPS did a good job of telling me how to get back to my office. Where I sat down and fired off an email... Response: 198th street was where I was supposed to go, not 98th. The person was deeply sorry. S'alright, I got to play with my GPS unit.

Yesterday I amazed the wife and son with the 265's ability to find any kind of store, dining establishment, etc and help you get there from where you are. I like that.

I want to see how the 765 does. I think I'll also enjoy it as a music player for my desk when I'm in the office, charging it via usb.

765T

I've had both units now since last November. The routing and maps are identical and they are both good GPS's. However, given the choice, I prefer the 765T. It has many more features which are described above, and also the speaker and TTS voice quality are much better as well. Overall the unit seems more solid in both performance and function.

I used the same download to update both my 760 and 885T

RoadNurse wrote:

I used the same 2010.20 map download to update both my 760 and 885T. You just have to go to your "My Garmin" account and select the registered unit you are going to update and select the correct unlock code for the map version you are installing on that unit. There is a seperate unlock code displayed for each unit and for each individual map version listed for that unit.

I just right click and copy the correct unlock code and then right click and paste it when the unlock code is requested during the map install.

There is no need to download the same map version again.

It might have been worth the extra $60 when you were buying new... but to take it back and upgrade seems like too much work for me.

Thanks for your input. How are the traffic updates on both units. Are they comparable or is one better than the other?

The speaker quality is very important to me as I am hearing impaired and need to turn the volume up. When I set the 265wt on 90%, it sounds tinny maybe. I have downloaded a program to make the voices louder, but have read that the 265wt voices distort at louder volumes.

We have an old 350 Nuvi that was just great. But now we want a larger screen and traffic and bluetooth.

Carol

Worth it

We are at Costco every week or two anyway, so it's really no problem returning.

I'd say the traffic updates

Should be identical because the info is coming from the same source.

Because you said you were hearing impaired, this should help you decide:

The Nuvi 265WT has no headphone/audio output jack, whereas the Nuvi 765T does. HUGE difference because depending on if your car radio has a AUX jack, OR a cassette deck, you can pump all the audio from the Nuvi to your car stereo. If your radio has a AUX jack, all you need is a 3.5MM Audio cord, 2 to 4 feet long depending on where you wish to place the Nuvi to where the AUX jack is on the radio. Be sure both ends are "male" ends. I found one that is 3 feet long and each end has a right angle at the plug. I searched far and wide, because when I get a new car, I will need the cord. This keeps the connection "cleaner" so the cord doesn't stick out from the surface of the radio or the Nuvi too much. If you need a web address, send me a note. These can be had for under $5 bucks including shipping.

The FM transmitter on the 765T works poorly.

I don't have a radio with AUX input, so I just went to Walmart and got a cassette adapter with a 3.5MM male end. It works great. I think it was 8 or 9 bucks.

If you also pair your cell phone to the Nuvi, with either of the above setups, your phone calls will also be directed to your car stereo and sound rich and full. The first time I used the Bluetooth, I almost ran off the road because I had the volume set so high when I got a call... I had NEVER heard a phone ring that loud.

Hope this helps.

Good Info

Rayzers

Didn't know if the traffic would be different because they use a different plug/antenna.

I already have a cassette adapter that I use with my iPod that I can use. Also on one of the cars (one we use mostly) we have a DVD player, so we have an Audio/Video input. I have a cable I can use with that also. One end is the 3.5 male end the other is the two RCA audio plugs. The only 'downside' I see to this setup is that hubby and myself both like to listen to the radio, and with this setup it is GPS only that will come through the radio. I guess we can't have everything.

Thanks,
Carol

265WT

2 friends of minw own 265WT & they mentioned that it's a great unit.
As for 7X5 series, I purchased a 785T for my wife & that thing as nothing but a nightmare. Garmin replaced the unit 3 times & each one of those unit had different kind of problems. Finally Garmin took it back & replaced with a totally different model.
My advice is to steer clear of 7X5 series altogether.

mp3 player on the 765T

RN

I really like having the mp3 player on long trips.

I bought an 8GB SD card and filled it with lots of mp3's...songs, audiobooks, podcasts, old time radio shows...I created a big playlist for listening to the songs, and put it in the mp3 player's shuffle mode...poor man's satellite radio, since I don't know what song is coming up next.

I play mine through the car stereo using a cassette adapter, as my radio doesn't have an audio/line in.

when "Jill" needs to interrupt the mp3 audio, she does so, gives me my directions, and then the audio continues, from the exact spot...I don't miss a thing, and I don't have two separate devices to try to control the volume on.

It's Here

Got the package today. The 265 WT has a plastic grained finish, and the 765 has a rubberized matte finish on most of it. There was no case included, unlike the 265 which came with one, a sleeve type thing. I had thoughts of returning the 265 without the sleeve, but what goes around comes around. I'll just get something or see if I have anything that'll protect it.

I have not powered it up yet. I'm going to read through some of the posts first so I set it up right.

Be back later.

I was in Wal-Mart the area where you buy soft drinks.I saw a flexible rubberize pouch with a pull string on it that you put your drink in.Works perfect to put wide screen gps in.When I jump out the car I put my unit in my pocket and this works great to keep me from scratching it up.Also use it to store unit in my carrying case.I thought it was my original idea but have seen other members post the same idea.
