Is it possible to eliminate selected factory installed POIs? Another option: if one cannot delete selected factory installed POIs, can one delete the icons that accompany the factory installed POIs?

Sorry, No and No. You can't do anything with the preinstalled POI's or icons on your GPS.

Deleting factory installed POIs
I don't think you can delete them either, but I can see why in some cases you may want to.
1. Out of date - moved to new location or no longer there.
2. Not interested in poi and may interfere with other info on map.
