Transferring maps to SD card?

I think i know the answer but i'm bored and wana make sure, lol, Anyway is there anyway at ALL to transfer my updates for/from my 350 every time to SD card for my 320 to keep that updated too? it reads maps off a card so if i can get to sd and can read it it's plug and play for my 320.

In a word...

NO.

Updates are unlocked to a speific device. From my understanding in talking with a Garmin rep is even if you did the original install to an SD card, it would only bu useable in the one unit.

If all the unlock keys are entered in mapsource

When I update maps, I ensure the unlock codes for licensed units are entered in mapsource (I use multiple computers and have to manually enter unlock codes to keep them current). You can find the unlock codes for each licensed unit in "my garmin".

When I put maps on the SD card, it is then transferrable to all licensed units.
If the unlock code is missing or invalid, the unit will issue a message "can't unlock map".

But does it work

if you have an update unlocked to say a 650 and load the map to an SD, can you then use that map on another unit that does not have a code for that map version? I think what you are saying is you have a valid unlock for each of your units for the current map.

Units must be licensed

Valid unlock codes must be supplied for the target units.

which was my understanding

The OP wanted to buy a single update and share it among several units.

That was obvious...

the intent of the post was obvious to the casual observer.
so was the response.

OK, Then

According to the Garmin website, "Maps that are preprogrammed onto SD cards are not updatable so they do not need to be registered."

If, for example you bought a 2010.10 map from Garmin on an SD card, like you have, it cannot be updated. In this case the license key is associated with the SD card, not the unit it is plugged into. This allows you to move the licensed map on the SD card between GPS units.

The license key for the 2010.20 update that you download, is associated with a single GPS unit and can only be used to update maps on that unit.

I just updated the maps on my 660 and when I ran the installer program, it looks for the GPS to be attached to the PC so it can verify the unit. In fact, I couldn't even download the file from the Garmin website without the GPS being cabled to my PC so it could verify the unit. Once the installer verified my GPS and began to run, it gave me no selectable option to install the maps anywhere else but on the main Garmin unit. I couldn't select an SD card if I wanted to.

If you want the maps on an SD card so you can continue to swap the card between units, you will have to buy another SD card with the Garmin 2010.20 maps preinstalled on it.

You bought an SD card with Garmin property from someone on the Electronic Bay of thieves. It certainly would not surprise me if that software were cracked and the seller was just reselling Garmin property to everyone he could. If you really feel this was a legitimate transaction, why not contact Garmin and ask them about it and how you could get an SD card that works with your GPS when providing no identifying number to lock/unlock the map to?

you are right it worked the same with me needed the unit plugged into the computer to verify, couldn't DL to any other spot, i guess i'll just have to buy a updated SD card every few years for the ol 320.

thanks all i knew that was the case but wanted to make sure i wasnt missing something.

Single download ... multiple units

A single download may be used to update multiple units, or to reinstall a map to an elligible unit. Each time the .exe (or .dmg on the Macintosh) file is launched, the update process prompts you for a valid product code for the targeted unit.

After the download is started, detach the gps, and do not select the close or launch options for the downloader. Save the download.

I use this process to avoid the multiple downloads. You must go through a validation process with Garmin to get a product code assigned to each eligible unit. The product codes and map unlock codes are found for each validated unit in "my Garmin"

After updating the units and verifying the map unlock codes in Mapsource, I use Mapinstall to select areas to be placed on the sd card. For example, I install US on the unit, and place Canada, Mexico, Europe et al on the sd card.

What you say is true, but

What you say is true and would work if you owned 2 nuvi models for example. Each would have their own unlock code and require only downloading the map update file once. You could then install the single map file on both units using each one's unlock code.

But Daman has a discontinued StreetPilot c320 which has no internal memory for maps. It has to have its maps on an SD card and those were not upgradeable. The normal upgrade path for a c320 was to buy a new SD card and that is still what he has to do.

Read here: https://buy.garmin.com/shop/shop.do?pID=6384#sp320

The OP was trying to figure out if he could buy the map update download for his 350 which has a valid unlock code, to next update the SD card used in the c320. The answer is "no," unfortunately. The StreetPilot c320 can only be updated by buying a new Garmin map SD card. He's not trying to pirate Garmin software (maps) IMO wink At least, that's how I read his question.

No that's not my intention i paid for these maps just would have been nice to make a backup copy on SD card if you will, for my other unit,or for back in the 350 for later use if needed.

i totally under stand what Gary is saying thanks

My Bad

Garmin maps sold on an SD card, by their definition, are not upgradeable. You bought and paid for those maps and have full use of them in your c320 for as long as you have the SD card.

However, "to make a backup copy on SD card if you will, for my other unit,or for back in the 350 for later use if needed" now sounds like piracy to me.

not sure what the ruling is there but no matter not going to work so i'll just buy a updated SD for the 320 every few years like i said.

Ok. Here's the deal.

1. Preloaded Garmin SD cards maybe used in ANY compatible GPS unit. They are not unlocked to a specific unit and may be moved between units at will any number of times. Obviously, they can only be used with a single GPS unit at a time.

2. Preloaded Garmin SD cards will not work if the data is copied to another card. They are locked to the card.

3. The maps on the preloaded Garmin SD card cannot be used with MapSource.

4. Preloaded Garmin SD cards are not eligible to updated with Garmin map updates. A new card must be purchased with the updated maps if an update is desired.

5. Maps updated from the map updates are tied to a specific GPS unit. They will not work with another GPS unit.

.

Yes right and noted, thanks MM.
