Next Release?

I suspect he's asking about the next release since it's been 3 months since the last one and Garmin promised quarterly updates in their press release om their NuMaps Lifetime subscriptions.

Not!

They promise up to 4 updates a year.

LOL. Are you sure? Garmin has been known to take away features on "updates". Maybe they can also reverse map upgrades?

"nüMaps Lifetime, a single fee program that enables customers to download the latest map and point of interest information every quarter for the life of their personal navigation device"

IF repeat *** IF *** they try to hide behind the vague language on their NuMaps page instead of living up to what their press release promised, I've bought my last Garmin and I suspect I'll be a member of a class action lawsuit against them in the future. I've bought about a dozen Garmin units dating back to the GPS45 but I refuse to do business with a company with deceptive business practices.

I'm not at that point yet but if another month goes by without a US map release, I will be.

I wonder what the clean out

I wonder what the clean out process is of the Navteaq data is? I would assume that the main goal would just be file size.

HECK with the press release, you needed to read what you bought. It says 4 per year, nothing about quarterly in the terms, at the time of sale.

Garmin's Policy

nüMaps Lifetime™: seasonal map updates for the life of your device = $119.99 USD

¹Terms and Limitations:
nüMaps™ Lifetime. If you purchase a nüMaps Lifetime subscription (sold separately), you will receive up to four (4) map Data updates per year, when and as such updates are made available on Garmin’s website, for one (1) compatible Garmin product until your product’s useful life expires or Garmin no longer receives map Data from NAVTEQ, whichever is shorter. The updates you receive under the subscription will be updates to the same map Data originally included with your Garmin product when originally purchased, or updates to map Data that you purchased separately (if applicable). If your Garmin product does not include, or you do not purchase separately, the map Data you want to update using your nüMaps Lifetime subscription, then you must purchase the map Data separately before you can load the updated map Data onto your Garmin product. In some instances, your Garmin product might not have sufficient memory remaining for you to load an update to the same map Data originally included with your Garmin product (or purchased separately, as the case may be), in which case you will need to select reduced map Data coverage for your updates. Garmin may terminate your nüMaps Lifetime subscription at any time if you violate any of the terms of this Agreement. Your nüMaps Lifetime subscription may not be transferred to another person or another Garmin product.

You should just cool your jets, Garmin has plenty of time left to make good on the deal they have with you! smile

Thanks for the advice.

I've already read the NuMaps policy on Garmin's site. A possible interpretation would be that Garmin is contracting to providing absolutely nothing in return to a consumer purchasing their NuMaps Lifetime product. They seem either unaware of the extensive case law regarding such terms or willing to ignore it for reasons I won't bother to guess. However, their failure to update and continued posting of their press release promising quarterly updates has legal relevance IMHO.

I've also read the Garmin NuMaps Product page on over a dozen of Garmin's authorized resellers, none of which include the same language on Garmin's site. Garmin appears to have no interest in making sure customers purchasing from their resellers are informed of their policy in advance.

My "jets" are quite cool, thank you. I'm pretty "even headed" and on the rare occasions I get upset, it's over far more serious issues than a vendor's performance. I simply spend my money elsewhere as do the colleagues and friends who seek my advice. Over the years, I've accumulated a number of folks who regard me as their "go to guy" for advice in this area and consult me before any GPS purchase.

After careful consideration, I've realized that regardless of if or when Garmin releases another map update, I'm no longer comfortable purchasing from them or advising others to do so. They have viable competitors who don't require careful research and reading of legal terms in evaluating their merits. I'll stick with companies who are more interested in doing the right thing than simply taking money up front on vague and empty promises.

One factor in my decision has been the input of other Garmin customers on this site like yourself who appear to have very low expectations from Garmin. Since companies are largely driven by customer expectations, the prevailing view here doesn't bode well for their future customer service.

Thanks again for your post and your help, although probably inadvertent, in moving on.

Boy have you got me wrong!

I can see you haven't been around or been doing much reading around here, with that statement!

Maps Due in September?

My brother called Garmin tech support yesterday about his 660. He also has lifetime maps and asked when the next release would be out. He was told September.

September

That wouldn't make it quarterly.
