765T tells me it's time to update the map!

OK, I bought a nuvi 765T on July 1. It came with NT 2010.10. So far, so good. A couple of days ago when I turned on the unit, I got the "Your map is more than a year old" screen before I could get the "Agree" screen. Very strange, I thought. Even stranger is that I got the same "Update" screen this evening when I turned on the computer.

My unit is registered, has the most current firmware and software, etc. Has anybody else experienced this with their nuvi?

765T tells me it's time to update the map!

Actually I have seen that also, and I also got a new 765T July 10th, but mine did have 2009 maps in it, and when I hooked it up to the computer to register it, that is when I got the popup telling me the map was more than a year old.
I downloaded the 2010.10 map and haven't seen it since.

See what Garmin says...

I just logged onto MyGarmin, made sure that everything in my nuvi was up to date - it was. So I sent product support an email asking why this is happening. I'll let you know.

That screen is annoying, and we're leaving for vacation - a long road trip - in a week.

Hopefully very soon but

Apparently it's a question of time before the harassment stops.

Have a great vacation and be safe !!

Garmin's response

So here's the response from Garmin:

"Thank you for contacting Garmin International. The message you are getting is a programmed message letting you know that there is a possible update for your GPS unit since you already have update the maps the message should stop after a certain number power ups.

I hope he's right. I DID NOT update my map. The unit came with the most current version of the map and firmware installed when I bought it. Why the "Update now" screen even started showing up is the real mystery.

Thanks, Canuk. I hope MM and Garmin are right. As I mentioned in my most recent post, it's a mystery why the "update now" screen even started appearing since my unit came with the latest map. Oh well.

I think that's BS.

Um, I think that's BS. On my older units the warning didn't come up until the map on the unit was approximately a year old. If it's under the 30 day return policy, I would just exchange it out. It could be a glitch with the firmware or something.

Speaking of firmware, have you tried updating the firmware? You can download Garmin's 'WebUpdater' to do so. You can find the download on their website.

I still think it's strange that it is doing that, it's definitely not normal. I've just updated my nuvi 350 that I've had for over 4 years to 2010.10 you were mentioning on your original post about a week ago. I don't think there are anymore updates available at this point. Did you mention to support what version you were currently on? Maybe you should give them a ring instead of Email. Please keep us posted...

You're probably right...

Yep, I have v3.60 firmware (came already installed) as did the map - NT2010.10. This was all communicated to tech support. There is nothing available for me to update to. I will keep an eye on this and if it doesn't go away, I will return the unit after I get back from vacation on August 2. Fortunately (or unfortunately), I've spent so much money at BestBuy this year, my RewardZone status gives me a 45 day return period.

Ironically, when my c340 started irritating me with the "update now" message, it did it only about once every couple of weeks. And the message stopped as soon as I updated to the most current map version. Software glitch in the 765T? Quite possible.

If it is telling you to update

and you are still in the free period, why not do the D/L and get the map installed in Map Source? A unit with Factory Installed maps will not transfer the map to Mapsource so it can't be used to build routes or other functions.

Already have it

My Mapsource does have City Navigator NT 2010.10 as its primary map. Probably loaded when I updated my c340 to the most current version. Did it with a DVD, not online.

Garmin response

So here's the response I got from Garmin this afternoon when I sent another email to Tech Support. Some info in his response I wasn't aware of...that the "update now" screen is programmed to pop up in the summer since that's when Garmin usually releases its new maps, and that you can get rid of the screen through a master reset. I did run Webupdater and I do have all the most current software.

"Thank you for contacting Garmin International. As stated previously, this message is unfortunately a timed message that will come up every summer as that is when the major updates have come out in the past. I apologize for the inconvenience. If you have run WebUpdater recently, and already have the latest software, you can also try a master reset to
get rid of that message, which may erase favorites.

1. Turn off the unit.

2. Place your index finger (a pencil eraser can be used instead) in the
lower right corner of the screen. Place it as far in the corner as possible and press firmly.

3. While pressing in the corner of the screen, power on the unit.

4. A message displays to confirm that you want to erase all user data. Press "Yes." (If the unit does not display this message, power off the
unit and attempt to perform the reset again.)

5. Your unit reboots automatically to complete this process.

6. When the unit starts up, you need to enter your language, time zone, and daylight savings preference.

After performing the master reset, you must place the unit outside in a safe, fixed position with an unobstructed view of the sky for a minimum
of 10 minutes to acquire and lock on to satellites.

I guess that's all I'm going to get from Garmin.
