how do we find the cameras

I was just wondering exactly how people are doing the research to find the cameras. It seems like just driving around to find them is not a very good idea!

Finding redlight cameras

Sometimes the local newspaper will anounce the location of new cameras going in. The intersection is all that Miss POI needs to enter the data into her database.
However, it is helpful when driving, that if you do notice a camera not in the database, to report that to Miss POI. A lot of feet on the ground can help to fine tune the database.

Unfortunately, I don't go to too many cities with cameras. My work always takes me to small towns! Even Richmond, VA doesn't have cameras. The closest city is DC for me.

What do red light cameras look like?

I'm a newbie and, having discovered the site, see it as a fantastic resource!

My question: Do the traffic lights with the cameras have a distinctive appearance?

Thanks for any info.

Is he right? Are they different than those camera stand at the corner taking car pictures when somone run redlight?

There are several types of cameras...

Speed - which is attached to a radar gun
RedLight - which is attached to the light and when it goes red, the camera turns on
traffic - monitors traffic, doesn't capture specifically speeders or redlight offenders.
Things that look like cameras - on some red lights, there are little 'cameras' that are actually x band radar guns that detect if there is traffic waiting for the light.

Great resource for metro travelers

Wow, I've only been on this site for a day, and it's a great source for all kinds of great information and POI files. Keep up the good work on the site.

Red light camera

I have loaded the POI for red light cameras. The GPS seems to beep at a lot of intersections where I do not see cameras?

The file has some future

The file has some future camera locations in it. That may be what you are seeing (or not seeing as the case may be).

Miss poi is always updating the file and looking for feedback.

Were these intersections in the Atlanta area?

I rarely see police cars

I rarely see police cars waiting on side streets. Where do you usually drive around in NYC?

Thanks for the website!

Thanks for the website!

Cameras

In Midwest City, Ok. they only have a couple of them. They move them around occasionally, so you never know where they will pop up again.
Some of those little camera looking things are actually a signal receiver.
When the fire trucks/ ambulance comes through, they emit a signal to make the light turn green in there favor. They have enough problems going through intersections as it is.

Finding Red Light Cameras

Good morning, everyone!

First of all, it's my understanding that NOT all states use them. In the case of Delaware, simply typing "Delaware Red Light Cameras" into "Google" displays several hits, including a few by Delaware's Department of Transportation (DelDOT). These sites list all current and planned installations, the fine structure, etc. I'm betting other states DOT sites list theirs as well. Police don't normally monitor these intersections as there's no need. The CIVIL fines generated by the cameras are usually very stiff, compared to the TRAFFIC fines generated by a citation issued by an officer who witnesses the same offense.

The State of Iowa is now trying to save the red light cameras as two separate judges have ruled them to be against the State Constitution. Apparently it has something to do with the right to confront your accuser.

In Dallas County (Texas), most cities have a sign just before you get to the intersection that has a traffic signal and the words "photo enforcement" on them.

I don't drive around just to find cameras, however, if I notice a camera on an intersection, and my C330 didn't beep, then I try to memorize the street names, and then later, email them to Miss POI, if I got the chance in the evening.

Better than that, touch the vehicle icon and you can save it as a favorite. Then, with Mapsource, you can transfer the data from your GPSr and retrieve the longitude and latitude.

how do we find the cameras

My red light alert went off several times today and I noticed something. Some of the cameras that are being reported as red light cameras are actually traffic monitoring cameras. These are not the same. Do we need to report these as the wrong kind of camera to Miss POI?

Lots of intersections have cameras that monitor traffic, and the camera systems control the lights so that when traffic in one direction is heavier, the system controlling the intersection adjusts accordingly, giving more green-light time to the heavier traffic.

Tenn. Cameras

I was travelling from Ohio to Alabama with my GPS on. I believe it was in the Knoxville area when on Interstate 75 and my red light alert went off. Up the road a little bit I noticed a box on a large, tall pole. Can someone tell me what these cameras are for specifically. We have cameras but not on the highway in Ohio. It seems as if the cameras would be difficult for highway use.

I can't wait to try out the

I can't wait to try out the poi of the speed zone and red light cameras

What do red light cameras look like?

In Staten Island, NY, the cameras are visable. They are either mounted on a tall pole or right along the traffic lights. In the city, it is very hard to see them. We hit 4 red lights last week and couldn't find the cameras. Probably it is because the gps unit warns you a 1/4 mile before and the strrets are short, you could hear the signal 2 or 3 blocks before the cameras. But we still could not find them.

Camera Locations

While driving, I look for cameras that I am not alerted to and report the locations to Miss POI.

I would think that those intersections would be safer and faster as people are made aware of the potential for tickets and/or traffic monitering. I see alot of people running unmonitered lights these days. It seams like everyone is in such a hurry these days.

new but wanting to learn...Thanks, David K.

Tenn. Cameras

They're just traffic monitoring cameras. Our locals news shows all the slow areas in the morning using these cameras.

Speaking of future cameras. How about future lights. The alarm goes off at one of the on ramp/off ramps of I-640 and Western Ave. in Knoxville. Unfortunately the intersection that shows a camera doesn't have a traffic light. This was probably the camera you got alerted to since the location is on the bridge right above the interstate so it goes off as you drive underneath it.

check your local police website

there probably is a page on red light cameras... for Houston http://www.houstontx.gov/police/trafficsafety.htm

Tenn Cameras

I had the GPS go off three times. That is normal for that area???? I thought it may be some type of speed camera on the freeway

Tenn Cameras

I just got my GPS so I haven't had a chance yet to see where else it will go off. There have been rumours about speed cameras but my radar detector doesn't show anything to indicate that they exist and believe me if they existed my mailbox would be full of tickets.

If you remember the locations I will check them out.
