Tour Guide?

I have a Nuvi 200w. And yes, I'm an idiot. This is all new to me, so any and all help is appreciated. Here's what I'd like to do:
I have downloaded and successfully installed the Wawa gpx POI file. During my trips, I would like to see any Wawa's within a 20,000 foot radius. I used POI Loader and I set those parameters in the Proximity Points alerts. I can see all the locations in my Nuvi's Custom POI folder, but they don't appear on my map. Is this a Tour Guide function (which I know little about)? What am I doing wrong and/or what do I need to do?
Thanks!
Bob

To borrow the line from the car company - you've got to be zoomed in to around 300 feet to have the icons appear. You did load the icon when you loaded the file didn't you?

Not an Idiot

I don't believe there are any real idiots on POI Factory. There are only people who are less experienced and willing to bare there souls to learn more about their GPS. That makes them inquisitive and in rare occasions, it puts them at risk of becoming a GPS Geek, but that's ok too, as long as your wife doesn't find out.

When you say, it doesn;'t show on your map, am I to presume that you have gone to Where To-My Locations-Custom POIs and selected any of the Wawas and then clicked on Map, instead of Go? You might have to Zoom in to see any sort of Icon.

Lets face it. Most Wawas will likely be pretty small.

Maybe not an idiot, but...

Thanks, guys. The wife has already asked me why I'm spending so much time on this - while I'm typing this, BTW. I'm just wondering if I'm asking the Garmin to do things it simply doesn't do - or something any self-respecting GPS geek wouldn't do.

To answer the first question, I did not load the icon. I just figured a default circle icon would appear. Is that not correct? And in order to bring up the Wawa icon, all I need to do is drag and drop it into the same POI folder in the Nuvi where POI Loader drops the GPX files. Am I correct there?

I've seen the list of all the Wawa's on the Nuvi's custom POI list - and I do understand that I can select one, hit "go", and make that a destination. But what I'd really like to do is set a destination (not a Wawa), and then have any Wawa in a specific radius (whether on the road I'm on or not) show up on the map while I'm driving. Is there a way to do that?

I hope that's clearer. Thanks for the help.

but...

Couple of things.

CharlesD45 has had several posts that give an outstanding overview of loading POI.

Simply

Create a folder (desktop is easier) and call it something like POI Files.

Download the POI files you want into that folder.
Go to the ICONS tab. Find the icon you want and then save the .bmp file to the desktop folder.

Open the desktop folder and make certain names match. For every icon ending in .BMP there should be a corresponding CSV or GPX file. These file names must be exactly the same except for the extension.

For the WAWA files, add TourGuide - just like I have it to the file names.

Bring up POI Loader and tell it to load new POI using MANUAL mode. You can now set an alert for all the files you want the unit to bong when you are near. The WAWA files, because you designated them as a TourGuide file will act differently. These locations will alert whenever you are within the radius of the location specified as a distance. Any other files you set a distance for will alert if they are within about 50 feet of your current location.

Remember, every time you run POILoader, it overwrites the file on the unit.

Subfolders and renaming POI.GPI files is another topic that can be researched later.

OK...

Makes sense. And I believe I did read the posts you referenced - it just didn't click with me for one reason or another. I'm an idiot, remember? mrgreen

So, to clarify - once I copy the Wawa.gpx file, I rename it TourGuideWawa.gpx? Or is there a specific naming convention I have to follow? (WawaTourGuide.gpx or TourGuide_Wawa.gpx, etc.) Do I then rename the corresponsing bmp file as well or do I leave that alone?

Thanks again for your patience with a newbie.

You have to have a space after TourGuide. Here is the lay out like a_user explained to you.I will use your example.

1.Make a folder on your computer and give it a name. Example My poi's.
2.Download the csv or gpx files and put them in that folder.
3.If you want to add a bmp . Download from site and also add to the same folder but make sure you name them the same as the file you want them to go with except the extensions.

>My pois=Main Folder
>>TourGuide Wawa.gpx
>>TourGuide Wawa.bmp
>>Walmart.csv
>>Walmart.bmp
>>Best Buy.csv
>>Best Buy.bmp

4.Hook the gps up to computer using usb cable and then run poiloader . http://www8.garmin.com/products/poiloader/http://www8.garmin.... Select My pois folder when you get to browse.
5.If you want alerts use manual mode instead of express.
6.You should get message so many pois are loaded at the end of the download.
7.On GPS go to where to then extras or my locations if you don’t see extras and touch custom pois and you should see them.
8.Every time you run poiloader it will overwrite the existing files.

Note. The biggest problems with the csv,gpx and icons not working are the files not being named the same except for extensions and having double extensions. Double-check each of them. The best way to prevent double extensions is to go to your folder options in the control panel and click view then find hide extensions for known file types and remove the check mark. Click ok.

Edit.Keep in mind that TourGuide in the file name will result in a radius alert.Just the word TourGuide triggers alert of 1/4 mile radius using express mode for poiloader.Using manual mode the more distance you set the larger the radius for the alert.
