Unusual Experience

My wife was using our new Nuvi 855 to meet a friend for golf. Her use and knowledge of the gps in general is limited. I added her destination as a favorite (by address). We selected this favorite to navigate to. She was off.

Thirty minutes later she called and said she was lost!!!

She made a wrong turn and had a hard time getting turned around to follow directions again. After four or five turns "Jack" announced arriving at destination "Middle School XXXXX". That was not her destination, and the routing was complete.

I had her re-input the destination and it took her there this time.......

We had no custom poi and/or favorites at the mentioned Middle School nor any place close.

Anybody else ever see this? What could have happened?
She said she did not touch the gps until talking to me.

I have never heard of this happening before.

Any input on this?

.

First things first...make sure you have updated the unit to the most recent 8x5 series firmware v4.60. This is a mandatory update.

See: http://garmin.blogs.com/my_weblog/2009/07/ask-garmin-updatin...

Use either WebUpdater to perform the update or go to the following link to download the direct update version (WebUpdater not necessary)

Update Complete

I have updated my 855 with the mandatory download.

I am not sure I see the connection between the update and the problem my wife had.

Does that mean that there was more wrong with the unit than just the firmware recycling for updates? This never happened with my unit.

Other than the described issue I had no problems with my 855 prior to the mandatory update. Worked fine.

What do you think?

Probably several things

It was probably a couple of different conditions that caused the problem. One was the changing of the database in the GPS satellites, the other may have required the unit to be turned on during the change and still a third may have been the GPS chip inside the unit.

It's only speculation and Garmin probably is not going to release the true causes.
