AZ City to reimburse 1,063 cited by faulty red light camera

Wonder how this got caught. If it had not been caught, many drivers would have paid for an illegitimate fine.

Quote:

Paradise Valley plans to refund a total of $36,000 to more than 1,000 drivers who received tickets for running a faulty traffic light at Tatum Boulevard and McDonald Drive.

The town sent 1,063 letters June 22 informing drivers ticketed between May 7 and June 17 to expect a full refund of their fines.

The yellow left-turn signal at the intersection lasted only three seconds, but town policy states yellow lights should last 4.5 seconds, Town Manager Jim Bacon said Thursday.

interesting

Yes, glad itw as caught. Makes ya wonder how many other problems are being at at various camera points

wow id like to see the line

wow id like to see the line of ppl trying to get their money back lol

I feel sorry for them. How

I feel sorry for them. How will they get compensated for the time wasted to take traffic school? How about their bad driving record/lost points which will affect their auto insurance premium?

The article doesn't mention anything about penalizing the city or Redflex for such "error". I get the feeling that they tweaked the timing on purpose. They make a lot of $$$ if no one notices the problem. And if they're caught, no problem... there's no penalty, just refund the money.

no wonder they call them

no wonder they call them scameras

Wow

I am sure they are doing cartwheels!

PV Started It All

Sounds like the mayor started asking questions of his streets department. The fact that they will get their money back from the fine or driving school is a surprise. The bigger problem not mentioned in the article is will MVD reverse the points for the violation. Even if they do, we all know they aren't the fastest and most efficient government agency. If the insurance companies run the "violator's" driving history and find the violation/points if/before they are removed, the cost in higher insurance premiums could well overshadow the cost of the violation. I remember when PV was planning to hide the cameras in fake cactus in the middle of the road. We can all thank this little town for traffic cameras as they were the first to use photo enforcement.

Haha, classic. Paradise

Haha, classic. Paradise Valley is the town with an anal PD that'll get u for even attempting to jaywalk. Police just sometimes need better things to do than to hide behind brush and cacti trying to get petty lawbreakers to cough up the cash.

Exactly folks. You can't

Exactly folks. You can't question the accuser, so how do you ensure justice was served?

A huge problem with machines enforcing human laws.

Another one caught

There was a story not too long ago about a guy in north Texas who got his ticket dropped because the company operating the cameras in the city he got the ticket in did not even have a business license in that city.

3.5 seconds is short?

Most scameras use 2.5 to 3.0 seconds.
3.5 would be considered long.

yes

Yes, I remember that story.

Time for all red light cameras to be checked or removed

The fox guarding the hen house.
It is in the best interest of the camera installer and the local government to give out as many tickets as possible in order to get the most money. Without oversight I can only assume that there are many more red light cameras out there that are not correctly set or faulty.

How big is THEIR fine???

Ok, so they made a mistake--how big is their fine???

Sure, they can refund the money, but don't they always tell us that fines are designed to modify our behavior--i.e. a punishment so we won't do it again??

So, how much is THEIR fine for running a faulty camera???
