POI and sound

Greetings,

I understand that if I download a POI.CSV file and a mp3 file and put them in the same directory on my computer and then use POI loader, every time a POI is approached the mp3 will be played. I presume this is how things work.

If the above is correct, what happens if I do the same thing with a POI.gpx file? Or does the gpx file have sounds built in?

The file I am interested in is:
Complete list of 8436 National Park Service POIs

Thanks in advance for your help!

I see you have a 255.It will

I see you have a 255.It will not play mp3's but you can do the same thing for alerts using wav files. You can download the National Park Services to Extra Poi Editor http://turboccc.wikispaces.com/Extra_POI_Editor and set a proximity alert that will be built into the file. Then you can load with poilader using express instead of manual mode. Here is how to get the voice alerts using wav files. If you don't want voice alerts you can settle for the built in bong alert.

a. Download the latest PoiLoader file at http://www8.garmin.com/products/poiloader/ .
b. Download Sox Exe at http://rapidshare.com:80/files/139638423/sox.zip .
c. After un-zipping Sox Exe file place it in your Garmin folder where the PoiLoader exe file is located on the computer.
d. The wav file for alerts will be named the same as the CSV or GPX file except for the extensions.
e. You can make your own wav files by going to http://www.research.att.com/~ttsweb/tts/demo.php and typing in what you want it to say or use a program to convert mp3 files to wav. When using the conversion it must be saved as PCM, 44.100 kHZ., 16 bit, Mono. Wav files are also on site for download.
Select manual mode on poiloader to set speed or distance for alert.

If you use Extra Poi Editor

If you use Extra Poi Editor which I would highly suggest. Here is something that I find useful. After you download a file to it.Click on edit, replace field.Use down arrow for field name and select proximity. In field value put number of ft.Click replace all. That will add a proximity to every one of the pois at one time. Then save as a gpx and you now have a built in alert.

Edit under options then preferences you can select unit of measurement.

That's a great tip to add a proximity alert to all records in a GPX file. Thanks!

I do that for all my files I

I do that for all my files I want alerts for so I can use the express mode instead of manual. You will also notice using the gpx files on the 255 like the 265 you will see the info on the first screen of the gps and not have to use the more button.

POI and Sounds

It seems that the only time I've ever heard sounds from POI is if you have only 2 finger POI. It is a little bit more runny and will fall of your fingers and "SPLAT" on the ground. 1 finger POI which is thicker and seems not to fall off of your finger. The consistency of 1 finger POI is like peanut butter whereas 2 finger is more like mayonnaise.

So it is my suggestion if you want POI SOUNDS use 2 finger POI. If you don't want POI SOUNDS use 1 finger POI.

Comedians walking the streets

H Hannah,

In these hard economic times there are comedians in Los Angeles, New York, Las Vegas and other entertainment hubs looking for work to pay their bills and you are giving it away for free.

You have me laughing all the way to the bank as the adage goes!

Although the guy with the alert problem may not see the humor in your post.
