While testing various types of proximity alerts on my nuvi 755T today, I inadvertently brushed my finger across the map, putting it in fixed mode--the map would not scroll with my vehicle, but stayed put.
When a proximity alert that I was testing fired off, it filled the screen with a white notification window containing the "More" text that I had put in there.
When I realized what I had done, I hit Back and the map returned to its normal scrolling mode. Now when I drove back to that very same proximity alert this time it displayed as that long dark rectangle in the upper right of the screen, much less noticeable.
So: when the map is not moving you get an alert that can not be missed. When the map is scrolling as you move (normal mode) you get the smaller alert popup in the upper right.
My custom audible alerts fired off as expected either way, which is nice. GPX files are the only way to go.
