Mandatory Software Update
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Today, Garmin released a free, mandatory GPS software update to correct a software issue that has been discovered to cause the nuvi 7x5 devices to repeatedly attempt to update GPS firmware, and then either shut down or no longer acquire GPS satellite signals.
Garmin nüvi 7x5 series products that are no longer able to acquire a GPS satellite signal may download a firmware update immediately that will correct the software issue. This firmware update may be downloaded using Garmin's WebUpdater program.
Garmin nüvi 7x5 customers who are no longer able to power on their GPS device will need to visit www.garmin.com/support, and select the first FAQ titled "My nüvi 755T, 765T, 775T or 785T is giving me the message 'Updating GPS Firmware' or will no longer power on..." Customers will then need to follow the instructions to request a return authorization so that the device may be repaired under warranty.

Garmin 7X0
Was that the "Updating Firmware" warning? I thought the 7x0 series didn't have this problem?
Yes it was and yes I installed the new firmware and continued to get the warning for a few days.
Returned from Garmin
I had sent my 765T back to Garmin for repair after it was bricked during the last fiasco (and before I read about the battery fix on the POI Factory). The service tech I had spoke with indicated that I would received a different, refurbished unit in return for mine. I was not thrilled about this as I really liked the unit I had. It worked great and had all my fav's, poi's etc. on it. When I received the replacement unit, I immediately checked the serial no. and lo and behold, it was the same unit I had sent in, so I was VERY happy. Seems Garmin didn't have enough refurb units in stock to send out as replacements and just fixed the ones that were sent in, and then returned them back to us (in a little over a week), which is fine by me. I immediately ran the web updater to d/l the new firmware and it is working just fine again.

I got a new 765T yesterday as replacement for the one I turned in to Garmin. It arrived 2 weeks exactly to the day I sent it in. I called last week and was informed they did not have new units and were expecting another stock and mine would be shipped today. I got it yesterday. Apparently, they got the stock soon after I called since it was shipped last week.
I had removed my SD card before sending it in, although I could not get data out of the internal memory since it was dead. I sent it in before the workaround was posted here.
However, I got my traffic subscription transferred to the new unit (after I called them this morning) while the newer map was to have been transferred as well. But the unit came with a new map, so I did not have to go through the trouble of downloading a new map.
765T
I did my updates and it got the black screen. thought my unit was dead meat also. gave it about 15 minutes and powered it on and it loaded the patches. I was good to go.
755t software issue
How many have sent their "bricked" units back to Garmin under the interpretation that they are getting an exchange. Only to get a repair?????
Funny you should bring that up. When my 755T died on me while we were on vacation, I called Garmin and after hanging on the phone for 40 minutes finally got tech support who told me that I needed to return my unit, that they would repair it and send that "same" unit back to me... The more I thought about it, the angrier I got so after getting home, I called a specific garmin tech support person ( this was a guy that helped me install web updater and maps when I bought my first garmin - he was great and for some reason I stored his phone and extension number and called him direct ). anyway this tech support gentleman apolgoized for my inconvenience and told me to return it ( he emailed me a ups shipment label so they paid for the return ) and he told me that they would send me a "brand new" unit. When I questioned him about "brand new", he assured me that he would see to it that I got a new, not refurbished unit. I mailed the old unit last saturday and hopefully will see the new unit in the next week.... we'll see....

Thats what they told me,
I called Garmin after mine died and the tech told me they would send me a brand new unit not a refurbished one. When I got mine back it was the same exact unit I sent in. I was happy to receive my unit back though. I had no problems with it before other than it shutting off like it did, so if I were to get a new one that could have a problem then I would have to deal with another issue.
I just update mine form 3.4
I just update mine form 3.4 to 3.6 ..SMOOTH!!!!!
Thanks for the advice:)
I think that

is the policy they actually decided on (fix your unit and send it back to you). It makes a lot of sense really both for them (less expensive) and for the user (get it back sooner, don't loss their favorites etc.). As you say the units worked fine before this one bad incident so why would you want a different one.

A much better solution in my opinion as well. No worrings about warranty dates, your files installed, the version of maps, etc.
Garmin 7x5 problems...
I posted this in another board but figured this might be helpful here. You may be able to get an upgrade from Garmin if your unit breaks multiple times! Here is my story:
I purchased my 765T from Amazon in December of last year. I used this one for ~5 months before sending it in for replacement. It had numerous problems, but I stuck with it thinking that the next firmware will fix the problems but it never did. Here are some of the problems I can remember:
- unit turns off by itself in the middle of routing... can't turn it back on and had to do a reset
- sometimes have to enter the destination 2 or more times before it will start routing
- unit freezes after I use the bluetooth function paired with my iPhone
I live in Chicago so I brought the unit to the Garmin showroom over here. They were not able to fix the problems and told me to send my unit to the headquarter. After 2 weeks I received a replacement 765T (refurbished) in the mail.
I had read about the software bug that plagued all the 7x5 units last month, so I updated the 2nd unit's firmware to the latest version before I even turned it on. However, the unit would only function for around 1 minute each time I turn it on, after which it would freeze... and so the 2nd unit was sent back to Garmin.
2 weeks later I received my 3rd unit (once again refurbished). This unit again has the freezing problem. By this time I was really upset and promised myself to ditch Garmin and get a TomTom cradle for my iPhone when it comes out later this summer. I called customer service to return the 3rd unit (each call to Garmin is a guaranteed 30+ minute wait)... I asked for a refund or an upgrade and they asked me which GPS upgrade I had in mind. I said I wanted the 1490T, but they didn't have those in stock yet. I then asked for a 885T, and the customer service agent said she can get me a 855 instead. I argued that my original 765T had bluetooth and the 855 doesn't, and she agreed to give me a new 885T.
I received my new 885T two days ago and so far haven't had any problems. I'll report any problems here if it starts to go crazy like all the 765Ts. I really believe something is not right with the 7x5 series. Google online and you'll find many people with all kinds of different problems with it. It's a shame as it's a very attractive unit if it works properly.

760s
My company has a couple of dozen 760s. This problem has happened to a couple of them. I've only had to reboot them to get them back in service, but I wonder if there is a more current firmware update for them that will cure the problem. We've had them for 5 or 6 months and I upgraded the firmware before installing them in our trucks.
I would love to upgrade from
I would love to upgrade from my current 660, but will wait till the bugs get ironed out on the 7x series. My brother-in-law has one and it gives him trouble.
My 765T has been great so far ...
In the half year I have owned it, it has been great. I was cought up in the mess a month or so ago, but the replacement is perfect.
With the prices dropping all the time, a sale at Costco with the 2 year warranty is a winner.

I got my 765T at the beginning of July. It came with the new update already. I have not had any problems whatsoever.

Battery On New 765T
My new 765T only goes about 30-45 minutes on a charge, certainly not the 3 hours Garmin claims!
Not lost anymore. Well, not as it pertains to driving anyway. -Garmin Nuvi 765t unt Mac user.
765T Firmware
I just got a new 765T. Haven't even taken it out of the box yet. What firmware version should it have to assure the above problem doesn't occur?
I believe that would be 3.60

Firmware
Thanks Jim8650. I just checked it and that's the version that's on there. Much obliged.
765T smooth upgrade
The upgrade went smoothly on my 765T. I was hoping for faster rendering times, but I haven't noticed any difference.
New 765WT
Just received my Costco 765WT and have found that SW ver is 3.80 so should be clear of the brick syndrome.
Added extra POI's (6.9 MB), the LEX, US Fodor Travel Guide, and an additional GMAPSUPP.IMG (Europe CN 2010) file to the unit's on-board memory and sent the wife off to work with it today after linking her Blackberry to the Bluetooth function.
Volume is way too low for my tastes for some reason and would rather not rely on FM audio use for this, and am hoping a later FW update will allow for greater volume levels.
Will post again if issues other than volume show up. Sent my earlier owned 265WT back as traffic simply stopped working altogether!

This is from blue63. It lets you increase the volume of your Nuvi through the TTSVoiceEditor, and it works! BTW - I set my volume to 93.
http://www.poi-factory.com/node/23822
Open TTSVoiceEditor
Selct File then open
Open drive for you Garmin i.e Q:
Open folder named Garmin
Open floder named voice
Select file i.e English American Jack
In box top right corner increase volume to desired level, I set mine at 90
Save file and you should be done..
Garmin 765T, c340...Is it about the destination, or is it about the journey?
It would be nice if there
It would be nice if there was seperate volume adjustment for the BlueTooth functionality. If you set the unit to a "reasonable" (can you say MAX volume) the POI warning are literaly screamed out at you!
try changing the volume on the phone

Try adjusting the volume level on the phone itself. It helps on mine.

All I can say is I'm
All I can say is I'm personally thankful for the person who sent their 765T in for repair and got a replacement...because I was able to purchase a spotless factory-refurb for $219, and it works like a champ!
I guess I've been pretty lucky - I've called Garmin during normal business hours (not at a peak time, like 5:00 or lunch time) and I've only waited 5 minutes at the longest, 2 minutes at the least. In all cases, they've been very pleasant and very helpful. As they say here in the South, "maybe you just gotta hold yer mouth right"!
At first, I was a bit disappointed with what I gave up with this unit, but it's starting to really grow on me!
Blessings! Mark
