Touching Your GPS While Driving May Become Illegal in New Jersey

I'm sure the manufacturers of voice-activated GPS units would be thrilled to see this pass:

I'm not touching you!

What if I just point to it very closely? Would that be a violation too?!

The biggest issue is the

The biggest issue is the enforcement, how is traffic officer gonna enforce this?

IMHO it's leaning on the invasion of privacy side since the interior of your car is just like your house.

Running out of ideas

Looks like they are running out of ides to make money.
What comes next? God help you if your nose itches! Scratch it and get a fine.
I can see a lot of court cases that will clog the courts big time.

Don't sweat the petty things and don't pet the sweaty things!

Not the same as a house.

How is looking into a car driving on a public road an invasion of privacy?

Inside your car

It's similar to your hand-held cellphone ban & occupant restraint law in the state of New York.

C'mon, I live in southern Jersey and it's beautiful! Remember, it's call the GARDEN state. Now...northern Jersey....

I grew up in NY when you could get Long Island Potatoes. Pretty soon it will be an urban legend why NJ is called the Garden State.

I thought manure is needed to keep a nice garden razz

This "law" qualifies.

Maybe this is a case of the majority being punished for a minority of bad drivers. I was behind someone fiddling with their GPS on the on ramp to a freeway on Saturday and what a pain that was! He kept braking and slowing down without any discernable reason and I figured he was probably talking on a cell phone, my first opportunity to pass him I saw he was playing with his GPS.

Whenever you are following someone that doesn't know where they are going, it doesn't take a GPS to make them drive slow, erratic and keep hitting the brake. Not taking sides here, just defending the GPS. It is the driver.

What other states have laws pertaining to use (or location) of GPS?

Illinois has no-texting law, but specifically exempts navigation devices.

Kentucky recently passed a no-texting law, that specifically INCLUDED GPSs.

Take the GPS out of the headline...

...And it reads a lot better, or at least more like an evening news story.

Just imagine the training

Just imagine the training cycle needed to bring NJ law enforcement officials up to speed (no pun intended) with regard to identifying and apprehending "GPS Gropers." Probably use Homeland Security grant funding....

I don't need to grope in my lap. I just whip it out and place it on the dashboard for all to see.

Difficult to drive and visit

It really is getting more difficult to travel/tour by car across state/provincial borders. You are never sure what laws pertain to the use of technology - be it GPS, radio, cell phone, tecting "devices" or even MP3!

Not even AAA can keep up. We are planning a trip through some 35 states (including Alaska) and AAA cannot advise me of various state laws pertaining to teh use of GPS and cell phones.

Good thing I travel without kids - but wait does my wife need a restraint all the time and can she smoke in the car since I'm the kid!

More Big Brotherism

You ain't seen nothin' yet! Insurance companies are now supplying GPS units for their insureds, where you MIGHT be offered a 5-60% discount. They won't sday what will happen to your rates if they don't like the readout. sad See http://www.liveinsurancenews.com/insurance-firms-utilize-gps... .

Progressive, Allstate and State Farm will provide a 1-30% discount if you are willing to let them plug an adapter into your electrical system (where the code checker goes) to check your driving habits. They also will not say what they will do to your rates if they don't like the readout. It's voluntary NOW, but... sad See http://www.wpxi.com/news/27216933/detail.html .
