Any way to remove a map from Mapsource?

Is there a way to remove older map versions from Mapsource? Each version (as in 2007, 2008 and so on) take up 1 GB of disk and if I hae a newer version - I really don't need the old version.

PC?

Are you using a Windows PC? If so, just go to the Control Panel icon to add and remove programs. Each installed map will be IDed there and can be selectively uninstalled just like you uninstall other unneeded programs.

PS--I can see doing this if you're short on space. Otherwise, it can be interesting to zoom in on an area with recent construction, then switch from newer to older maps to see how things have changed.

?

Does it not overwrite the previous version? I don't have a monitor currently hooked up on my old computer to check. I only have the current version on this computer, and haven't done a map update with this computer yet.

Not on a PC

On a PC, new maps install in addition to the older versions. My computer and Mapsource shows City Navigator NA NT 2009, 2009.1 and 2010.1. An update does overwrite the older map on your nuvi GPS, though.

Add/Remove Programs?!?

Really? I only have one map installed in MapSource - City Navigator North America NT 2010.1 which I can see in MapSource under Utilities>Manage Map Products. My MapSource version is 6.15.6.

When I go into Add/Remove Programs (WinXP Pro) the only entry I see is Garmin MapSource. Since the list is alphabetical, what name(s) are the maps shown under?

For me with Windows Vista 32-bit Home Premium and Mapsource 6.15.6, when I go to Control Panel's "Programs and Features" (the Vista equivalent of XP's "Add/Remove Programs"), I see Garmin Mapsource, three City Navigator map versions, Topo 2008 US, other Garmin programs (POI Loader, WebUpdater, Communicator PlugIn, MapInstall, Trip & WayPoint Manager, and USB Drivers.) All in all, I have 11 Garmin items that can be individually uninstalled by normal Microsoft Windows Uninstall procedures as you'd do for anything else on your computer, plus a free non-Garmin-brand Arizona Topo (alphbetized under A for Arizona). Each of the 11 Garmin items, whether programs or maps (City Nav, Topo) are alphabetized under G as each item name begins with the word Garmin, so they're all bunched together if your list has been set to use alphabetical order. Maybe we need someone else using Windows XP Pro to shed more light here. I'm trying to remember my XP Home days--when in Add/Remove Programs, do you have an option of seeing "updates" as well as programs? If so, will checking the box to add more Add/Remove selections allow the maps to appear as being "uninstallable?"

At least with Vista, I can organize the Add/Remove list many ways. Is it possible that your list is not alphabetical and is organized by size, installation date or whatever? Even if that's the case, it'd just relocate the maps in the list, not make them invisible.

So I'm a bit confused until someone else provides some input into our differences seen.

So far then new "gmp" formated maps 2009.1, 2010.1 are not stored in the usual way or location and have no registry entries so you can't find them by simply looking them up in the registry. That is also why they can't be removed from the control panel "add/remove" programs function.

You can find them in a direectory tree structure on a PC at

C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\GARMIN\...

The names are pretty obvious at this point and you can remove them by identifying the map product folder name in that tree and deleting the whole directory structure below it.

Ah, interesting. Are you referring to Windows XP, too? If so, then under Vista things must be different since I can individually remove maps including 2009.11 and 2010.10 via Vista's Control Panel.

Removing Old Maps

I was able to remove the old map from my XP computer through add/remove programs.

Note - I had previously just tried renaming the older map folder - but when I went into Mapsource it failed to start up (eeek!) so I re-named the folder back to the original name.
