Traffic Advisory

I am totally new to the GPS world and to Garmin. I just purchased a Nuvii 265WT. I was driving from New York City to South Jersey. I was on the Garden State Parkway. From exit # 88 south to Exit 82 I was in total traffic, but yet I had the Green Icons for the Traffic advisory. What's the story with this?? Its a good thing this service is free. If I had to pay for this, I wouldn't be too happy!!! Is this a normal occurance once you leave big cities?

Not always accurate

My Nuvi 760 comes with 3 month traffic report trial. During the trial period I've seen traffic delay alert when there was none. I've also seen what you saw, bumper to bumper traffic but there was no alert on my GPS. After 3 month trial ended, it was easy for me to decide whether to renew it or not.

you left the area of coverage. don't know why the green icon stays on the display, but the NY metro area is covered well, and then you will lose/leave coverage as you drive away from NYC. Coverage holds thru about Freehold NJ when heading S from NYC. Won't pick it up again until MD .... Balt. coverage area.

Traffic Advisory

Thanks chewbacca, and DJS. Your very helpfull. I now realize that you can only be in a certain area to get those traffic advisories. Its a good thing they are free. I definately would not want to pay for this limited service!!!

Traffic Advisory

MSN advisories work well on my 680 when I'm in the major metro areas with coverage...

I usually experience the opposite issue. When departing from Long Island through the Bronx and over the George Washington Bridge I do get the traffic alerts however on my return from PA I have yet once to get a lock onto traffic data. There can be an hour plus delay on the GW Bridge or other crossings and I never get the traffic updates as I approach the NJ/NYC borders. I still have to rely on local AM broadcasts, my XM radio and my Sprint services on my Palm Pre for any info.
I learned that the hard way a few times as I sailed toward 1.5 hour long-standing backups on the approach to the GW Bridge while my Garmin showed no delays anywhere!
Over the period if ownership I did a few Traffic upgrades via Garmin but I still get no data upon my return to what should be a data-rich area. Otherwise I usually get traffic data in and around NYC and Long Island.

coverage can be hit-or-miss... it depends on how the roads are monitored and then depends on if the info is transmitted. at least that's how it is in Philadelphia...
