Nuvi 765T and red light cameras not working.

Hello,
I just bought a Nuvi 765T. This is my first GPS. I would like the unit to be able to let me know when a red light camera is coming up. I bought the unit on 6-18-09. The maps are updated as of 6-19-09. I installed the Garmin POI loader app (PC). After maps were updated I installed Speed-Cameras.csv (June 17) and Redlight-Cameras.csv (June 17).

I tried it going past 2 different red light cameras and nothing. No beep, tone anything. I tried setting it to single and continuous tone.

I even tried simulation mode and it still didn't work.
Proximity points is checked (on).

Red light cameras: 159th and Kedzie (Markham, IL) and 127th and Pulaski (Alsip, IL).

My location is Chicago Illinois south suburbs.

Any ideas? TIA

Several things could have gone awry, the most common is not loading the files correctly.

The two files you are trying to load must be in a single folder on the computer. For the present, don't worry about anything else, just put them in a folder.

Run POILoader. It will ask you for the source file location - this means hit Browse and give it the folder name - not the files, but the name of the folder containing the files.

POILoader suggest running the program in the Express Mode - don't. Select manual instead.

POILoader will read the input folder and start displaying the names of the individual files inside the folder. Here you can set alerts. Speed cameras default to a speed of zero (0) MPH. You can set this to any speed you like, mine is 25.

Red Light cameras default to an alert distance of 1320 feet or 1/4 mile. I set mine to 600.

When you have set the alert distances, POILoader will then load the files into the unit. Both files have to be loaded at the same time - actually every time you run POILoader, it installs the new one overwriting the old. That's why you can't load one file and then load another. (Now there are tricks, but we won't get into those here.)

If you want icons to be displayed on the screen, you can down load them as well. These must have EXACTLY the same name as the camera file with the exception of the extension which is .BMP.

Custom alert sounds are a little trickier and the procedure to install them varies depending on the unit. Since your unit plays MP3 files, you can download the sound file for the particular camera type as an MP3. This file, like the icon has to have EXACTLY the same name as the camera file except the extension is .MP3. The most common reason a sound file does not play is there are two periods in the name meaning the file has a double extension.

Good luck, and drive safe!

a_user, Nice description!

a_user,

Nice description! When I first read this post, I remember how confusing it can be. New jargon and different file extensions to understand.

embii,

I studied this tutorial before loading the red light file. It is quite comprehensive without being a "data dump".

embii.Using the latest beta Redlight camera file I don't see the location for 159th and Kedzie (Markham, IL) .The only listed for Markham is 159TH and Dixie so unless I overlooked it you will not get alert for that location.127th and Pulaski (Alsip, IL location is listed. A-User gave you a nice lay out to find the problem.

Thanks and how to ..

a-user.
Thanks. I got it to work. The problem was using express mode. I used manual mode. I named the mp3, bmp, csv all the same (for red light for example). Now it is able to work in simulation mode.

charlesd45,
How can we add the 2 red light cameras and 159 and Kedzie (Markham, IL)

"The intersection of 159th & Dixie went live October, 2008, while the East and Westbound approaches of 159th & Kedzie were activated in late January, 2009."

Great site, thanks guys!

Use the "report an enforcement camera" link on the right side, near the top of every page, just below the "Log out" link.

The Camera files are usually perfect

Miss POI spends many hours weekly working the accuracy of these files for us. When someone uses them for the first time, and says they don't work it is always User error not the files.

Most common user errors

Misplaced files
MisNamed files
User not reading "FAQ"
User not reading "Getting Started"
