RedLight Alert Sound
Have you checked the volume option from the settings menu? Some models will allow you to adjust the audible alerts volume independent of the navigation volume.
load alerts
You can also delete the alert sound which is an MP3 file in the poi folder. Then you would only get a visual alert no sound.
You would still get the default audio alert -- the ding

Nuvi 660 -- and not upgrading it or maps until Garmin fixes long-standing bugs/problems, and get maps to where they are much more current, AND corrected on a more timely basis when advised of mistakes.

Many audio editing programs allow you to change the level of the output. A search here will reveal previous recommendations.

Which is probably what the OP was referring to as being too loud. I had the same exact question. I don't see any way to reduce the volume of the default "ding" alert sound for proximity points (which for some reason is incredibly loud on the nuvi660) independent of the nav or mp3 volume.
Under Settings/Proximity Points/Alerts/Custom POIs/Audio Notification there are just the three options of Single Tone, Continuous - Speed Alerts, Continuous - All Alerts. No volume control.
So the solution seems to be using a custom audio file for redlight alerts which has a lower volume.

The easiest way is to re-record the alert and lower the volume of the recording when recording.

That's why I don't like MP3 alerts. The sound of alert is not in perfect balance with the sound of GPS navigation unit. I know there are several options to get it to work properly but why bother? The default *bong bong* sound is so much better... short, simple and sounds just about right - not too loud/soft.
try this
