Additions to POIs

First, let me say hi to all as I'm new here and find this site amazing. Also thanks to the staff (John) for getting my password straightened out.
Although I understand the basics of loading in POIs to my GPS, what I don't know is if I should also leave the associated vocalizations and icons in the "to be loaded" folder for the POI loader to assimilate into the finished custom POI file it will load into my GPS. Is this how it's done? I've read through the tutorials about POIs, but didn't see that mentioned (except maybe in a round about way). Thanks for any help before hand...

Just name the icons and

Just name the icons and sounds the same name as the csv or gpx file except for the extensions and put them in the same folder.

Welcome

A hearty welcome to the site!

As Charlesd45 stated, the poi file, icon and sound file all have to have the same name with the exception of the extension. The most common problem for sounds and icons not working is they contain a double extension. Your 885T will handle mp3 files, so no sound file conversion is needed.

Glad to have you join us - and check out Gary Hayman's site. He has a great site full of tricks, tips, and advice written in a breezy conversational style. If you do a search on Gary Hayman, you will come up with several pages that will give you the link to his personal page.

and someone, please correct me if I am wrong

using an mp3 sound for your alert, and playing mp3's on your 885T at the same time, may cause the mp3 player to skip to the next track when the alert sounds.

I still have this happen with my 765T, and I am current with the firmware, version 3.40

so I use wav files for my alerts, and the sox.exe file in the folder with POI Loader.

as I understand it, Garmin is aware of the glitch, but so far have not fixed it.

Using the GPS as an mp3 player...

So how do you use it as a player? Do you load your songs on your SD card? I'd guess that's it... My Nuvi 885T uses the mini SD, like what's in your cell phones. Just picked one up today at Wally World. They have some good prices on them.

You can copy mp3s to either the unit or the card. Make sure you have the ID3 tags filled in if you want to be able to find them listed under the various categories. See page 27 in your user's manual for details on use.

I have an 8GB SDHC card with a variety of content from songs to audiobooks to radio dramas and talk shows to podcasts
