POI Alerts

Don't ya hate that answer.

Alerts can work while in map mode without navagating to a destination... if the coordinates for the POI are within about 50 feet of the road you are traveling on.

For example, the coordinates for each POI in the Highway Rest Area Combined file are intentionally placed at the entrance to the rest area exit ramp so that they will alert as you approach them.

However, if the coordinates are placed far off the road you are traveling on, say for a gas station, or a shopping center or a restaurant, then it will not alert.

I have set my alert to 750 meters, does this mean it will not work in map mode?

The distance you set it at has nothing to do with it if the coordinates are more them 50 ft off the road of travel when you haven't selected it as a destination.You can increase the alert distance by adding the word TourGuide to the name of the file.For example.TourGuide Cracker Barrel.csv .This gives you a radius alert.You can increase the radius by using manual mode for poiloader.Be aware this may trigger more alerts then you want.See http://www.poi-factory.com/node/7043 for more info.
