I have a Nuvi 660 and have two audio files loaded to tell me when I approach a red light or speed camera. I know my unit plays MP3 files but the 265wt that my father just purchased does not play the MP3 files.
Is there any file type that he can load to the gps to give him that audio warning of a red light or speed camera, similar to what I have with the MP3 file, or is he stuck with the dinging alert that just let's him know he is approaching something?
He lives in an area with no speed cameras so we can't test it currently. But he is headed to Chicago soon and will be trying it out there.
Thanks,
John
You can use wav files to get
You can use wav files to get the voice alerts.I have a 265 and have the alerts installed. Here is how you do it.
a.Download the latest PoiLoader file at http://www8.garmin.com/products/poiloader/ .
b. Download Sox Exe at http://rapidshare.com:80/files/139638423/sox.zip .
c. After un-zipping Sox Exe file place it in your Garmin folder where the PoiLoader exe file is located on the computer.
d. The wav file for alerts will be named the same as the CSV or GPX file except for the extensions.
e. You can make your own wav files by going to http://www.research.att.com/~ttsweb/tts/demo.php and typing in what you want it to say or use a program to convert mp3 files to wav. When using the conversion it must be saved as PCM, 44.100 kHZ., 16 bit, Mono. Wav files are also on site for download.
Select manual mode on poiloader to set speed or distance for alert.

Simulation

Under Wrench/System/Simulation, you can enable simulation. Then, tap the screen once to go into browse mode and then drag the map to a point where there are cameras, tap the screen to place an arrow where you want to set your location, and tap the "Set Location" button. Then pick a point well past a camera location, tap the screen to pick a destination and hit GO.

265wt and audio alert
This does not seem to be working for me.
1. I downloaded and installed sox.exe in the same directory as the POI Loader:
C:\Garmin>dir *.exe
Volume in drive C is C_DRIVE
Volume Serial Number is 7A7F-9B22
Directory of C:\Garmin
07/15/2008 05:05 PM 6,384,728 PoiLoader.exe
05/27/2009 09:42 PM 1,712,128 sox.exe
2. Here are the files in the directory from which I created poi.gpi:
C:\Users\DEK\Downloads\Redlight & Speed-Cameras>dir
Volume in drive C is C_DRIVE
Volume Serial Number is 7A7F-9B22
Directory of C:\Users\DEK\Downloads\Redlight & Speed-Cameras

04/30/2009 07:40 PM 1,782 Redlight-Cameras.bmp
06/01/2009 02:11 PM 252,216 Redlight-Cameras.csv
04/30/2009 07:40 PM 52,504 Redlight-Cameras.mp3
04/30/2009 07:40 PM 1,782 Speed-Cameras.bmp
06/01/2009 02:11 PM 34,273 Speed-Cameras.csv
04/30/2009 07:40 PM 52,504 Speed-Cameras.mp3
6 File(s) 395,061 bytes
2 Dir(s) 86,443,626,496 bytes free
3. I then ran the Garmin's POI loader.
4. Ran the 265WT in simulation mode to drive past the location of a red light camera.
5. The red light alert occurred, and the Garman beeped, but there was no voice alert.
What's up?
WAV
The whole purpose of adding Sox is to be able to use wav files instead of mp3 files (which your unit can't play). You need to convert your mp3 files to wav.

Clarification on Sox making it possible to use wav files
Bentbiker,
I wasn't fully paying attention to the implications of the directions on using Sox. It works fine now.
Thanks.
