Thanks for the info, hopefully it helps my gps studdering
Say What????
I'm not sure I understand this one:
Added power off for FM transmitter after 5 seconds of non-use.
Can someone please explain the purpose of this?
GPSMAP 76CSx - nüvi 760 - nüvi 200 - GPSMAP 78S
That means...
FM transmitter automatically turns off after 5 seconds because it's so weak and useless. The purpose is to discourage us from using it. Of course I'm not serious. You're right... that doesn't make sense.
Did anyone else notice version 4.7 was never released? The latest firmware released in Dec 2008 was version 4.6 and now 4.8 is out.
I use it.......
I don't have any other option for listening to audio books through the stereo so I use the (admittedly crummy) FM Transmitter quite often. I'd hate to have it automagically turn itself off all the time.

Thanks for the post
I had almost given up hope that Garmin would provide an update for the 7x0 series.
Just downloaded and installed the new version. Looks good so far.
It's useless in Los Angeles.
It's useless in Los Angeles. Well... it works if you don't mind loud static noise. It doesn't take a long time to annoy me so I stop using it. FM transmitter works flawlessly on I-15 in the middle of the Mojave desert, loud and clear. No static.
FM Transmitter
I have a nuvi 750 connected to an external FM modulator called "Sound Feeder" model SF120 made by ARKON RESOURCES that works great. It has a good signal out to at least 20 feet and operates on a single 1.5 volt alkaline battery. This unit claims a 3 dB freq. response of 50Hz-15kHz. I believe I paid less than $20 for it
.

Agreed...it's useless here in Los Angeles.
What I don't get is when Garmin removes useful map detail with new units (7x5 in particular), most likely to avoid confusing & distracting the driver with "unnecessary" visual detail yet at the same time include a woefully underpowered FM transmitter "feature" that requires the user to fiddle with and retune whenever the station gets overrun by another. In areas like Los Angeles, this could be every couple of minutes...if you can even find a clear station after losing the one you've already tuned to.
It may be of some use to those in sparsely populated areas but for the majority of users, it's better off used in the middle of the desert.

The low power FM transmitter
The low power FM transmitter is not Garmin's fault. It is the FCC being very strict. Same problem with any of the newer XM radio's. For some reason, aftermarket transmitters are getting away with being stronger.
4.7 Was For Costco

If I'm not mistaken, the 4.7 was for a Costco branded unit and was never released to the wild. Those that have that version who update to 4.8 will lose the branding and any special features.

Were there any special
Were there any special features in the Costco unit? I got one from Costco beginning of the year with v4.1 and there were no special Costco features that I recall from that one. Maybe Costco customers were just unwitting beta testers?
any problems
being reported with this DL?
New Update?
My 760 has version 4.60 (not a Costco). Web updater is showing NO available update for me!
nuvi' 2450

v4.80 has not yet been released for WebUpdater. Use the direct download links in the first post. They will do exactly the same thing that WebUpdater will do...install & flash the firmware.

So far, so good
Any problems being reported with this DL?
I've tested 4.8 today after the update last night and routed myself to several places. All is well. But then, I don't remember any stuttering with the previous 4.6 either.
I will give it a try. Thanks
I will give it a try. Thanks for the update
seems to work fine...
also appeared to eliminate many of the 'could never get rid of those options whether you had updated them previously or not' voice update options.

Costco
I just received a 750 from Costco this week. It had version 4.5 installed which contained nothing special that I am aware of. When I went to register it on May 11 it told me I had to update to version 4.6 which I did..Don't know anything about version 4.5 or version 4.7. Version 4.5 doesn't even show up on the update page. I don't have any stuttering problems and don't know what the improvements to phone number/contact display does. Anyone else know???? Personally I don't see any reason to load 4.8 and possibly have problems. I will wait and see....

V4.8 firmware in a 7x0
I've had occasion to travel about 300 miles over the past 2 days using the 4.8 firmware in my 750 and it appears to have indeed solved the voice stutter problems (I've always had that annoying problem to various degrees).
And... it only took them what? ... 3+ years and a discontinued product. It's about time!
Now if they even care to solve the "loading maps" delay fiasco we'll have a unit that's pretty decent. LOL

Delete the trip log......

Try deleting the trip log, on a regular basis. This seems to help with the loading maps delay.
Thanks for the heads up

Boot up delays & trip log

In the past, I really haven't found that deleting the the trip log makes a difference for me/us. It might appear to at times and perhaps it's a contributor but perhaps it's also just a coincidence.
I can say 2 things pretty definitely about observations I've made regarding the slow boot behavior on the 2 750's my wife and I have.
(1) The long "loading maps" boot seems occur ONLY when we power the 750 up having been on a route the last time it was used. Clearing the track log seems to not matter. Also, those long boots don't happen every time even in this situation.
(2) It seems that we NEVER experience that long boot delay if we power it up and have NOT used it the previous time out to navigate a route. In fact it boots amazingly fast 10-15 sec most of the time.
I don't know.... I still think it's mysterious!

Some problem
After update, I meet 2 times system halt in past week, It's big trouble for truck driver.
Applied the 4.8 to one of my
Applied the 4.8 to one of my 780s and no difference so far.
As in it hasn't caused any new problems...yet!
Update working fine
Updated my 750 to 4.8 recently. Have taken two longer trips with no problems.
Thanks
I will update tonight.
Beechcreek
I loaded ver 4.8 last week.
I loaded ver 4.8 last week. One thing that's noticeable is the time it takes to locate satellites. It's so much quicker than ever before. A cold start (after being switched off for a few days) used to take a few minutes (2 to 4 min) to find satellites. Now it locks on satellites in a less than 2 minutes, sometimes less than 1 min. Coincidence?
I agree

I'd have to agree with this. My nüvi 760 exhibits the same behavior. If I've been navigating a route previously, it takes a much longer time to load the maps than if I've just been using it for something other than a route.
