Waypoints or POI ????

ok, here is what I am trying to do and if someone could lend a hand.... I am looking to ride my motorcycle from the DC area down Skyline Drive, which connects to the Blue Ridge Pkwy and take that to something that will get me back to FL. My problem is that I want to create the route on my computer, upload it to my Nuvi's SD card and kinda go from there. In other words I want to create a custom route- if I use maquest it only allows a certain # of waypoints . . . I searched this website and there is someone who has plotted the course already, but it goes south to north - I will be going north to south. Help please

.

You realize that the nuvi 265w does not have the ability to store routes, right?

What you will need to do is to create a series of Waypoints or Custom POIs (it really doesn't matter which) and route to them in sequence manually.

You could take that route that the other person has created and just rename all the Waypoints to match your desired sequence.

i thought I could store a

i thought I could store a route on the sd card. what would you sggest to create the route with numerous waypoints?

Like MM stated the 265 will

Like MM stated the 265 will not store custom routes.I plan to go west next month. What I did was make a custom poi file with all the places that I plan to visit. When I touch on that custom poi file it will show by the closest to my position.I will touch the first one and once there and ready to leave touch the next one and so on.

waypoints or poi

ok - thanks for the help.

routes

I used to write a file with my points then select the one that needed and go to the next one. I've got a 760 that does routes and I like it for that reason. I drive tour buses and my next one will be the one for trucks that's supposed to come out some time soon.

One other note.The 265 is

One other note. The 265 is known to do more then one via point.I have done 8 on mine.Put the end location in go to and add the via points.I would still keep the custom poi file just in case by accident you lose the route and via points by shutting off the unit to early or hitting stop by accident.

Custom Route

Do you have a laptop? If so why not create a daily route for each day and at the end of the day just load the next days ride into your garmin. I'm out West and I have created lots of trips on Mapsource and loaded them in as necessary. I don't know if this will help you out or not. I have a Quest2 garmin on my bike and haven't had a problem to date (2½ years)..

next destination vs. ROUTE to next destination???

I'm a newbie here too, so I could be missing something, but if you navigate from POI to POI or Waypoint to Waypoint the GPS is selecting the "fastest" route between them yes?

I just got a Nuvi 500 for use in car and on my motorcycle, and for the motorcyle I am NOT interested in the "fastest" route (i.e. up the interstate) but am interested in the "most fun" route which generally involves roads that the GPS will not auto-select via it's internal "routing" function errrr that's what I think anyway...???

i.e. I would rather take 20 miles of twisty secondary roads rather than 12 miles of interstate.

My plan (please somebody tell me this will work) is to use the routing tool in MapSource to be able to device a "ROUTE" that uses the roads I want to travel on between POIs/Waypoints.....

I'm starting a new thread on the difference between POIs & Waypoints wink

I understand the 265 does not do "routes" so this is not an option there, ... I sure hope it works as I think it does on the 500.......

working on day @ a time

I'm working on a project right now for a 6 state trip different hotel each night.
I used streets & trips, Google earth and expertgps
to get my lat/long.
I'm doing a sub folder for each day(main folder vac09)
all saved to sd card
each days has POI's to make it route the way I would like to go.(and things I would like to see)as well as my hotel far that night. so each day I will open that days folder goto the 1st. then sec. etc. Not sure if there a better way but should work
if that helps any. or maybe someone can tell us both a better way. idea

Routes are great for 'scenic' driving

KWB, This is a perfect use for making your own routes. Using MapSource, you can lay out routes that the Nuvi would NEVER pick on it's own.

You'll need a Nuvi that supports stored routes and you'll have to get the MapSource software and familiarize yourself with it before your trip.

We did just exactly that - drove an uber-scenic route around Lake Michigan and along southern Superior last summer. Some of my 'roads' were unpaved. My Nuvi 760 faithfully took us there and followed the route that I had created.

Happy Trails!

Thanks John! The Nuvi 500 is

Thanks John!

The Nuvi 500 is one of the least expensive models that does support stored routes. I have MapSource loaded and have actually downloaded a "test route" to the Nuvi and it works so I am good.....

Now I just have to spend some time with the manuals to get a better hang of using the s/w and Nuvi wink

oh and ... figured out the whole deal on POIs vs. Waypoints vs. ??? :-/ I'm a bit confused there, but started a new thread on that yesterday:

Routes

Glad you got it working. I have a Quest2 on my bike and created my routes to and from Sturgis last year, it will store daily routes. Also you can set the GPS to avoid unpaved roads or freeways expressways etc.. I use the MapSource as well then transfer the routes to the GPS when I have them setup the way I want.

I organized a trip once for a competition and I was surprised by the people from Hotels Cyprus. They even gave me a great deal and they included a meal in the price of the room for no extra charge.
