Average Range for Speed Camera

We don't have speed camera's in Texas, but I'm about to take a road trip. At what speed of the limit do most speed camera's cite a car for? +5 mph? +7 mph?

I tried searching for this information on this site without luck.

Did a number of searches on

Did a number of searches on the internet and the average answer seems to be "Speed Limit +10%+2mph" that means say a speed limit of 30 then it would be 30+3+2 so at 35 mph the camera would flash you. They have your number as soon as your in sight so, the best advice might be to slow down soon as the signs tell you there is a reduced speed ahead. Try to stay within the limits and it shouldn't cost you any hard earned cash.

Average Range for Speed Camera

Actual tolerance varies by whatever the local jurisdiction allows. Most will allow 10% and some even more.

In Az ...

they'll flash you at 11mph over. It's standard throughout the state as far as I know, I've never heard any other number mentioned.

Interesting information,

Interesting information, thanks for all the answers.

I really wish there was federal legislation on minimums for camera violations.

AZ speed cameras

In Arizona they are set at 11mph over the posted limit. When I do go over the limit I hoover around 9 over the limit as analog speedometers vary per vehicle. Then when I am alerted I slow down to 5 over the limit. Hope that helps some.

Around here they go at 10

Around here they go at 10 above. They're trying to crack down on everyone who does 10 over (just about everyone).

The nice thing about my car is it has an after market body kit. So the license plates are mounted about 6 inches in to the front grill and rear facia(sp?).

I've had a cop ticket me for it. I fought it and won. The Highway traffic act states that the plates must be visible to the naked eye. And they are. They're just not visible if your eye level is more than 3 feet above the grill.

Deterrent

I thought the speed and redlight camera's were suppose to deter speeders and redlight runner's, how can they do this if there is no warning that there are camera's enforcing the law? I was travelling Delaware this past weekend and the GPS alert went off at several speed and redlight camera enforcement areas. I managed to spot the camera's but there were no warning signs anywhere within miles of the locations. This is just a means of generating revenue and not a means of reducing the number of violations in an area that has excessive safety violations. If it was meant to increase the safety in a particular problem area then signs would reduce the incidence of violations in that area and reduce the risk factor to those that abide by the laws.

It's up to the state

It's up to the state to decide how notifications regarding the use of cameras are handled. There is no national law requiring warning signs but there are standards for the signs if they are required.

mph over

so it sounds like it varies by state. I sure hope in the future all of these cameras get banned on the federal level.

Glaze your plates

You can use a clear coat type of trimclad on your plates. It has to be a specific brand (sorry, I don't know the brand off hand). When the camera takes a picture, it just shows up as a white spot. No numbers or letters are revealed. And the police won't be able to tell if they pull you over for a different violation. This method is legal in a few states and illegal in some others. So find out before you do it.

This also works for intersection security cameras.

Why wait for the government to act? Start fighting back now.

Glaze your plates - doesn't work

If you watched Mythbusters you'd know that the "glaze" that supposedly works to foil photo radar ... DOES NOT. They tested five of the most popular myths like that one and all of them were false.

1 Kph over

In Quebec, Canada, They started out with new cameras for Redlight and Speed violations. They have stated that the camera will trigger at 1 Kph over the limit . The images will flash over to an officer and he will dertemine if you recieve a ticket.

Check out the cameras.

Also plate spray

My son is selling the plate spray in Canada, You had to keep you plates perfectly clean to get the glare. It worked fine never got a ticket until the city went from using film to digital cameras( much better resolution I guess).
.
He now sells the plate covers along with the spray. Covers sell better.

The good news is that most

The good news is that most speed cameras use radar still, so a good radar detector can help you out a lot.
