Nuvi - Can you mark roads as Closed?

I was wondering if you can mark sections of roads as closed, so the Nuvi will automatically route around it when calculating routes?

Here in St. Louis, there is a several mile section of a major highway closed for repairs, and it will be for many months.

(Using nuvi 750, btw.)

marking roads closed.

Nope! can't do it in a 750 or any other Nuvi I'm aware of.

That was a favorite feature of my 2610, I miss it!

No. The Nuvi does not

No. The Nuvi does not provide that option.

Thx for the quick

Thx for the quick response.

Too bad... I was hoping the mapsource program could do it, as I've only had the unit two days haven't dived in that deep to it. I guess they want to try to push those traffic subscriptions, huh? Overall I like the unit thus far, however.

You CAN do it in Mapsource... Maybe

There is a well-hidden facility in Mapsource that looks like it will let you do it, but I think it's clunky. The couple of times I tried it I gave up on it, concluding it was more trouble than it was worth. Maybe you'll have better luck with it though.

On the Mapsource menu, click Edit, Preferences. Then click the Routing tab. In the Try to Avoid pane, click the Advanced button. Follow the instructions on the Manage Route Avoidances window that appears.

Good luck with it. I'd appreciate it if you'd report your results. I'd like to think others would be interested in knowing also.

st louis hell

yea that would be awesome i too live in ST Louis and the entire dam city is basically under construction new roads and closed roads are every where and down nearly every street near the highway changing almost daily

.

You absolutely CAN set avoidances on specific streets or areas in MapSource.

However, these will NOT transfer to the nuvi.

Sorry, there's no way to do it on the nuvi.

Mapsource has manual avoidances

Mapsource lets you mark roads and areas as avoidances. It will not download those avoidances to the Nuvi, though. If you build a route in Mapsource, it will observe the avoidances that you created. Then download the route to the Nuvi and it will avoid those closed sections that you marked off. But it will only do that for that one saved route. It won't use those avoidances for any routing that you create on the fly on the Nuvi.

never even thought of that

thanks for the question and the answers.....i never even thought of that.....kudos

The Nuvi 5000 and 8x5 series allow you to do that

The Nuvi 5000 and 8x5 series allow you to exclude both road sections and entire areas.

Link to setting up custom route and area avoidances on the Nuvi 5000. The 8x5 series is done the same way.

MM you are 100% correct. However, there is one way you can get your nuvi to avoid major closed highways. You Must have FM Traffic and use the Avoid Feature.
