I was wondering if anyone has had any luck using a map of, say, the UK (or any other country), on a tom-tom unit that came with the map of North America preloaded.

Maybe.
If you mean did I replace my NA map with a European map, then no.
My GO 930 has both NA and Western Europe maps, and I have used the Western Europe maps several times with great success (in Germany and Italy).

You can have as many maps as your internal memory and/or SD cards will hold. You are only limited by storage capacity. They will all work fine and update with mapshare.
Europe maps.
I have all of Europe on a 4gig SD card. They only take up less than 2 gig of the card. The maps work great. I found a lot of road changes in Dublin Ireland that the 2008 maps did not have. I have recently updated to the 2009 maps so hope fully they have been updated to the road changes.

I believe they are out. And you can check with Tomtom's trip planner online. That's supposed to use the latest maps.
