I was wondering if anyone has had any luck using a map of, say, the UK (or any other country), on a tom-tom unit that came with the map of North America preloaded.
If you mean did I replace my NA map with a European map, then no.
My GO 930 has both NA and Western Europe maps, and I have used the Western Europe maps several times with great success (in Germany and Italy).

did the euro map come preloaded?
Maybe of no help, but I have done that on my Nüvi 760, works fine.
Yes, it came with both NA and W. Europe maps.
You can have as many maps as your internal memory and/or SD cards will hold. You are only limited by storage capacity. They will all work fine and update with mapshare.
I have all of Europe on a 4gig SD card. They only take up less than 2 gig of the card. The maps work great. I found a lot of road changes in Dublin Ireland that the 2008 maps did not have. I have recently updated to the 2009 maps so hope fully they have been updated to the road changes.
updates are always behind
Second quarter TT maps will be out at the end of May or the first of June.
I believe they are out. And you can check with Tomtom's trip planner online. That's supposed to use the latest maps.
Google Maps will be a version ahead.
