Northern Baja problem

I took my nuvi 780 to northern Baja last weekend and found that immediately after crossing the border (Tijuana) it would freeze every five minutes or so. Had to power-off-then-on each time.

On a hunch, I unplugged the MSN-Direct power-cord and it stopped freezing.

It worked fine again with the MSN-Direct cable plugged in immediately after crossing the border back into the US.

(I'm using the latest 2009 North American map, recognizing that only the most basic roads are included for Baja.)

Any ideas?

No roads

Steve, there might be some basic Mexico roads in the base map ... but there are no Mexico roads in the North America Garmin maps. You have to buy the Garmin Mexico map for coverage.

As to MS Direct locking up ... once again, there is no coverage in Mexico ... so I imagine once you stray too far from the border, it isn't going to work.

Garmin 205, 260W, 1450LMT, 2460LMT, HEREwego for iPhone ... all still mapping strong.

Firmware problem, not a road problem

The problem wasn't caused by lack of roads on the map (the road we were driving on was on the map) and I had no expectation that MSN Direct's data service would function there.

The problem was that the MSN_Direct unit caused the Nuvi to freeze up repeatedly, requiring constant re-starts until the MSN Direct cable was unplugged. But this left the Nuvi running on batteries only.

This is definitely a firmware bug.

Garmin stated that they've not seen this problem and suggested downloading a firmware update for the MSN Direct unit.

Baja maps

I suggest checing out Bicimapas at http://www.bicimapas.com.mx/

I've used their maps first on a GPS V and now on a Nuvi 255W. Their prices are low and the maps are good.
