755T QUESTIONS

Ok guys... got my 755T in the mail earlier this week, finally took it out of the box and hooked it up in the car friday night after work...programmed it to take me home and it was spot on... absolutely perfect... but I have a couple of questions. When I first turned it on I got a message window saying the "traffic software" needed to be updated... My concern is that I've read other posts where people have done updates, and then had repeated other problems with thier gps units.... Not sure which way to go with this... and 2 other questions... going into the voice menu I randomly selcted "jack".. I wanted to hear the other voices but whenever I clicked on them, nothing would happen. apparently the voice is only activated when there is movement and a reason for the gps to talk.. is there a way to listen to each of the voices while just sitting in your driveway, and 2, if you set the volume for one voice, will that same volume level be retained it you switch to another voice? By the way, the display on this thing is really nice... appreciate your help.

answers ....

1) run WebUpdater and do the traffic and firmware updates ... most of us are running the newest versions - problem free

2) to hear voices w/o driving .... simulate a drive

3) volume is set for the unit, not the voice. the newest voice file updates make the volumes more consistant.

.

Roland,
To download the traffic update you will have to download the latest firmware. However, if you don't want to actually INSTALL the new firmware, you can delete the update file before rebooting the gps and the firmware will not be updated. The problem with updating the traffic receiver software without the latest firmware, is that the traffic may need both updates to work. You can try it without the firmware, but just know that you may have to go back and do the firmware if the traffic still doesn't work correctly.

I totally agree that updating firmware is a mistake unless/until you need it to fix a problem.

On my 660, I can press the next turn window (lower right) and it will repeat the last verbal navigation announcement. I don't know if changing the voice will wipe out the previous announcement, but you can try that first.

Nuvi 660 -- and not upgrading it or maps until Garmin fixes long-standing bugs/problems, and get maps to where they are much more current, AND corrected on a more timely basis when advised of mistakes.

Roland,

I have my 755T running the newest firmware and traffic firmware with no problems. Contrary to some, I do updates when ever they are posted and they have actually fixed issues instead of creating any. I have had my 755T for three months now and I love it, hope your experience is the same.

You may want to wait a bit to use your free map update. There is a thread on here that the 2010. maps do not have the Junction Views, and I upgraded and it does not appear to have them.

Messages have been sent to Garmin Support hopefully they get it corrected soon.

On the Subject of ?s about the 755T

On the Subject of Questions about the 755T??? I am currently am using a Nuvi 760 which for the most part like... I do have an issue with the 760's routing and accuracy... My Nuvi loves an access road that runs along a highway I use a lot and routes me down it rather, than the highway I wish to use... I generally will just ignore the 760 and take the highway and make it recalculate the route... Once I am on the highway the Nuvi still shows me on the access road and not the highway that I am on... According to a review I have read about the 755T it can determine which lane you are driving in for use with junction view which would be much more accurate... Those of you with experience with the 755T can you confirm the 755T is more accurate than the 760 please....

Thanks
Dana

No, that is not the case.

No, that is not the case. Junction View is no way tied to what you are asking. The reason it shows you on the access road when you are really on the highway (or the opposite) is because consumer GPS units are not pinpoint accurate. A road that closely is parallel to another road cannot always be seen as two different locations in relation to where you actually are. The map will show both roads, but the GPS can not tell which one you are on, at least for awhile. I have a 750 and 765T, both would behave the same way in that instance. In fact, I would say my 765T takes a little longer to start recalculating sometimes in that circumstance than the 750 does.

Where do you have your GPS mounted? What accuracy level does your unit achieve? An external antenna would be a lot less expensive than buying a new unit? Do you know if your car is on of those with a windshield that blocks RF signals?

As for the Lane Assist, I don't think the unit claims to know what lane you are actually in -- it just tells you the lane you NEED to be in.

760 Nuvi mounting

I have my 760 mounted with a bean bag mount... I have tried it both the driver side down at the base of the window and pillar and on the right side towards the middle of the dash... The two locations on the open road give a accuracy of about 12 ft... My 760 seems to also take awhile to notice if I have missed a turn as well... The problems I am having may be related to lack of sensitivity in the firmware settings… I may be wrong but from what I have read in forums is that the best one can hope for is about 9ft accuracy with a external antenna... Do you think it would make a difference as to vehicle placement on the map???

Thanks Dana

Unless you have a bad unit, or the map you are using has the wrong coordinates for the street, it is totally a matter of accuracy. The unit snaps your vehicle on the map to the closest road to what it calculates as your location. However, if you are getting 12 ft accuracy, that is great and should not be the cause -- surely there is more than 23 ft between the streets so even at the maximum error of 12 ft, it should not see you as closer to the other road. Could you borrow a unit to compare that section of road with them sitting side by side?

Good Idea

That's a good idea!!! I will use my 60CSx with the same route loaded in it...

Thanks Dana

PS I see Amazon has the Nuvi 885(Non T) down to 381 offered by Electronica Direct only $50.00 more than the 755T... Seeing as I live in Green Bay and we will never have traffic services and maybe just the Packer's Stadium in 3d those two features are not a great loss if I don't have them... Any opinions 755T vs the 885…

Update

There has been some "issues" concerning updates, but I do not believe any of them weren't resolved by later updates.

I am running with the latest update and my unit has been much more stable compared to when I first got it. The unit still reboots every so often during a route recalc while driving.

At worst, I may need to do a 10 second slide force reboot once every few days rather then on a daily basis.
