Faster Time or Shorter Distance?

As a general driving around setting, what would you recommend, Faster Time or Shorter Distance? It seems that the default Route Preference is Faster Time.

Shorter distance

If I'm using my GPS in my local area or place I already know well I go with shorter distance to discover new routes. If I'm doing a long driving trip I'll go with faster time.

Faster Time too

Shorter Distance could be useful to find alternate route during traffic jam.

new garmin

With my new Garmin 760, I am trying to figure out which is better, faster and shorter - neither is always the best. I have a basic Magellan Roadmate 1412, I love Magellan because you can select all highway, no highway, shortest, fastest. This makes more sense to me and allows for some lovely country drives without constant yakking from the machine. And it shows gas stations etc in the area. The problem with the Magellan is it's SLOW, when you are faced with 4 or 5 choices in a big city you need to know which option is correct right now.
So, I have two GPSs in my car! Not in use at the same time! So far.
