I loaded a custom image that will display (splash screen) after the Garmin start up screen.
Is there any way to load a custom image that will display when the GPS first starts up.

Mike,
I think most of us get the customizable splash screen as our first screen. What is the first screen displayed by the 5000?
Nuvi 660 -- and not upgrading it or maps until Garmin fixes long-standing bugs/problems, and get maps to where they are much more current, AND corrected on a more timely basis when advised of mistakes.

Mine today just stopped working on a new Nuvi 265WT. When I pick a picture to use for start up, the unit allows for it, but when I restart the unit, the new picture doesn't show and I get a white screen.
Also, when I go to connect up my USB cable, the connection screen comes on and after 3 seconds, the screen goes black. Other than this - the unit works fine.
Probably in Firmware

Although I've never seen such a screen, I'm betting it is embedded in the firmware. However, have you at least done a search for all of the jpg files on your unit? If it is just a named jpg, you MIGHT be able to just substitute another image with the same name.

I solved my problem - I took it back to Costco on a 30 day warranty exchange. The new one acts correctly when starting and when I attach the USB cable, my computer allows for linking properly.
I just had a bad unit from the factory.
