Arizona Declared Speed Trap By AAA

While they haven't exactly labeled it as a "speed trap", The Triple A has decided to add a special advisory to maps of Arizona indicating the state is a "strict enforcement zone." The reason is the speed camera program aimed at planting dozens of fixed and mobile units on all major freeways and highways (they're well on their way already).

The mounted cameras are operated by underground sensors so accurate POIs are one of few reasonable countermeasures. The mobil units are really sneaky but operate on KA band radar so can be sniffed out by any decent radar detector long before you reach them.

The freeway units don't pop you unless you're doing 11 mph over the speed limit anyway so aren't a serious hazard. Speed cams in individual cities may not be as forgiving. Stay away from Scottsdale if you have a heavy right foot.

I made the trip from San

I made the trip from San Diego to Prescott Valley down to Phoenix and back to San Diego last Saturday... Logged ~900 miles. I sure was glad to have the Speed/Red Light cam file loaded. I could not believe the number of Cameras (both Mobile & Stationary units) For the most part the file seemed to be very accurate for the entire trip.

So that said - Thank you to ALL who have invested their time in the upkeep of it.

- - I dont think I will get any love notes from AZ DOT...but I should know for sure in a few days.

Thank you again...

I'm not a AAA member but I can view the site. I'm using Internet Explorer as my browser.

I'll be sure to watch my speed...

I'm heading for Surprise, AZ in a couple of weeks. I will have my 770 loaded with the enforcement camera poi's and the rest area poi... Talking about speed traps, I live on a hill over looking one (It is a listed speed trap) As I sit here typing I hear the short blasts of a sirens as somebody makes a left turn that is forbidden in the a.m. and p.m. .... While I've been typing this they have nailed two, make that three.... shock

Edit I guess it isn't really a speed trap, but it sure raises a lot of revenue... it's some kind of trap...

No, it's open to all. In fact it opened for me clicking from the quote above. Give it another shot or copy/paste the link into your browser.

That's Getting Pretty Bad....

When AAA is flagging a whole state for strict enforcement.

AAA usually supports fairly strict enforcement.

There currently is a bill

There currently is a bill floating in the AZ legislature to turn the cameras off even though it could cost the state millions for a breached contract.

Stats on distractions?

It's gotten to be so bad here in AZ that I go far out of my way to ride on the highways with heavy camera enforcement. Whenever I *do* end up on them, I always see traffic surging around the cameras (sudden braking immediately before the sensors, and acceleration afterward). I've seen (and almost been involved in) several near-collisions from brain-dead drivers nearly rear-ending the vehicle in front of them due to the sudden changes in speed.

I'm curious, has anyone seen any studies concerning an actual *increase* of traffic incidents (collisions, distracted driving, etc.), due to traffic cameras? It might be a little stretch, but as heavy as the camera use has become in the areas surrounding Phoenix, I've got to imagine someone has started making the argument the cameras are doing more harm than good...

There was a study done in

There was a study done in Washington D.C. a few years back on their red-light cameras that showed (I don't remember exactly) either that traffic accidents increased or that they didn't decrease. I also remember something referenced like, overall for the area, traffic accidents at traffic lights had decreased except for those areas with red-light cameras.

These things are just lazy law enforcement and have nothing to do with safety and everything to do with raising revenue. Probably the worst thing that could happen to these areas (in general, not just D.C.) is if everyone started going the speed limit. Their revenue would decrease tremendously and I bet they'd be playing other games like lowering the speed limit on interstates through cities to something like 45MPH or shortening yellow lights.

My brother went there last

My brother went there last year and he said that there are speed traps left and right.
