Is this a Traffic Camera?

I passed a strange looking camera that was bolted to an electrical transformer this morning.

I didn't think that NJ was supposed to have ticket cameras. This differs from the standard traffic cameras that are mounted to light poles.

Can anyone identify what this thing is?

I guess we can't hot link in photos, so I put this on a flickr account, web address below:

It doesn't look like a speed camera...

It could be a traffic control or security if in fact it is a camera...

Traffic Cam

I think it looks more like a traffic or security cam than a speed camera w/ photo radar. Perhaps some of your local stations use it when reporting traffic. Your state highway may have a list of traffic cameras.

It's a security camera.

If you could read what's on the box, you could pretty much tell for certain as well as who probably owned it. The pole is too low for a traffic cam.

Traffic or Security Camera

It is not a ticket Camera, but is most likely traffic monitoring and feeds the video back over a high speed data line to the Department of Transportation traffic flow monitoring center. Some municipalities also use this type of camera to monitor high crime areas and feed the signal to the police department dispatch center.

Looks like...

a traffic control camera to me.

Cameras in Arizona

Most of the cameras in Arizona used as speed cameras have multiple arms to hold stobes and other things to make the cameras work.

The red light cameras here are usually larger than the housing on the one shown in N.J. It is definitely a camera housing in the photo and it is definitely focused in only one direction. Some security cameras I have seen can be controlled to move around their pivot point on the pole where they are located, but they are mostly top-mounted rather than side as the one in the photo. Most of the traffic monitoring cameras on the freeways here in Arizona have the ability to change direction after receiving a signal from a control center so they can monitor in a few different directions. These cameras usually have a circular aluminum antenna mounted in a vertical circle around the camera and are usually along a freeway access road, a tunnel or some other intersection of interest to ADOT or a municipality.

I wonder if there have been problems in the area with copper theft or vandalism to other utility type equipment? The utility company may be attempting to protect the transformer or something else in the photo with a security camera.

Its definately different than other traffic cameras...

...on the same road.

I-287 has a fair amount of small cameras mounted up high. You can view them from the web.

For reference here's where this thing lives:

Hmm....

I noticed it's connected to a high voltage transformer (or something HV).

Could it be a laser weapon that will pulverize any speeders on the road? shock

Any other thoughts?

I haven't been able to correlate this with any of the live traffic cams.
