Backup existing maps on Garmin nuvi 200

Is there a way to backup the existing maps on Garmin nuvi 200?

Where are the maps are been stored defualt?

Thanks.

.

You can copy the files to your computer as a backup for that same unit. Be advised that they won't work on a different unit.

The files you are looking for are named GMAPMAP.IMG (the basemap) and GMAPPROM.IMG (the preloaded detail maps).

likely a typo

The basemap is named GMAPBMAP.IMG

Yeah, just a typo. Thanks guys for picking that up.

backing up

the garmin is flashed based so no real need to backup because it won't crash like a hard drive but i guess it doesn't hurt.

backup your nuvi

Being "flash based" doesn't mean the nuvi is impervious to having critical files on it (like the main detail map) accidentally deleted or corrupted, either by the user or otherwise. It's always good to have a backup up all contents of the nuvi just in case something does happen.

That would be silly

That would be a careless, not backing up a device that contains data that can be backed up.
Even flash drives corrupt, so it would be silly not to back up your GPSr, unless you can't see it as a mass storage device.
