Maybe I'm thickheaded, but I don't understand the purpose of the "detour" button.
The manual says "the unit calculates a new route and provides you with new instructions. The c330 attempts to get you back on your original route as soon as possible".
Doesn't it do the same thing if you stray from your route anyway? It will re-calculate your route on its own. Why would one need to push the "detour" button?

Detour Button - Purpose
The detour button is used in the event that the calculated route is obstructed. When you detour, the Garmin tells you which way to go to leaving your current route. Although you can alter your route yourself by driving and letting the unit recalculate, the detour will keep you from getting off on exit A, when exit B would be your better option.

I'll have to try it.
Thanks,

No problem. I have been waiting for a real life reason to try it, myself. My main reason for buying a new GPS was for help when my primary route was not an option.
Good luck,
Eric

I have been waiting for a multi-million dollar check to arrive in the mail. (Let’s see if it works twice in a row.)
Yesterday, I said that I have been waiting for a real life reason to use the detour button. Well, within 24 hours of making that statement my normal commute route was obstructed which resulted in a huge traffic backup. Well, I used my magic “detour” button and was guided across surface streets thru residential neighborhoods and back onto my normal route beyond the traffic backup.
On this one day, my Garmin saved me at least an hour, and I am extremely impressed. My only regret is that I didn’t get a GPS that does routing sooner. I can imagine how much time I could have saved over the years by just knowing alternate routes to my destination.

Very cool.
When you press "detour" does the GPS assume that the road you're currently on is now to be avoided?
-Tom
Not necessarily the current
Not necessarily the current road you are on, but the current path that you are on. If your path required you to make a turn and you detour, then the alternate route may tell you to continue straight and take a different turn.
