Zip Code DB Searchable by Zip

If anyone is interested, I have compiled a ZIP Code POI DB (CSV) that is searchable by zip code.

I can upload it to POIFactory if any of you want it.

It is quite large (43190 zip codes, but because the state abbreviation is the first 2 letters of column 4 it would be easy to extract the state or states you want and be able to make the data suit you.

All the data was taken from the last US Census data available with this data.

It returns: State, City, TimeZone and GMT-x

So ZipCode 00612 returns "PR,Arecibo - Atlantic Time Zone GMT-4"

ZipCode 62922 returns " IL,Creal Springs - Central Time Zone GMT-6"

ZipCode 99583 returns "AK,False Pass - Alaska Time Zone GMT-9"

ZipCode 96796 returns "HI,Waimea - Hawaii-Aleutian Time Zone GMT-10"

ect, ect.....

It covers all 50 states, Puerto Rico, US Virgin Isls.

I left out Guam and all the Pacific Rim US Protectorates such as Yap, Palau and Saipan... These places may have multiple zips but only one actual location (LON-LAT)per island. So using these zips for finding a city won't work. The only exception I can find is the Wake Island is listed but that is because it does have a Honolulu HI zip code assigned to it.

For a very interesting looking route, try routing to ZopCode 98222 (Blakely Island WA N48.57605 W122.80998)

It can be routed from anywhere.

SUPER DUMB question...

Can someone kindly tell me what the purpose of the zip code poi is for?

Zips by City or Zips ...... That is the question

With the existing Zip Code POI file you can only search by name of the city.

I have seen on here where people have asked to be able to search by zip code. Therefor the reason for the new one.

You should have room for both ZipCode files just label one as searchable by city and the other bt ZipCode.

As for the new file being an improvement over the old one is for the users to determine. I have seen where people have asked to be able to search either way.

Also I have added the Time zone by name and also the GMT-x factor.

I can understand wanting to use the Zip Code instead of the State/City to look up an address, but, sadly, most of us in the US cannot do that. I, too, am confused as to why someone would want to route themselves to a Zip Code. Is the file aimed at using the GPS as a reference tool rather than a routing device?

... Question

Quote:

I don't think it's a dumb question; there can be other uses for some POIs besides navigation. Here's one use for this one: If you travel in an RV or Big Rig, you may have a satellite dish so you can watch TV when parked 30 miles or more from the nearest outpost of civilization. The DISH receiver tells how to point the antenna based on zip code only. This POI shows the closest zip code to current location. Not all flavors of GPSrs offer a "Where Am I" feature nor do less expensive dish antennas point themselves.

I still think the members need both ZipCode files...

I still think the members need both ZipCode files...

One searchable by City and the other by Zips.

I am not trying to take over someone elses project, but only trying to help those that requested a zip search by zip.

See thread: http://www.poi-factory.com/node/16555

Some of these members have valid reasons for wanting the file searchable using zips instead of cities.

My entry was only ment to be a supplement to the original., not to eliminate the original POI and/or its maintainer NickJr.

I am sorry if I seemed to have stepped on someones toes, not my intention.

I hope that you Miss POI will allow both types of zip files to be present. That way it will serve the members better.

Thanks for any of your consideration in this matter.

Not exactly what I wanted.

I was hoping to find locations of post office buildings. Apparently the locations are the geographical center of the zip. A good example is Muscatine IA 52761. Mapsource puts it on the Illinois side of the river.
Thanks for all the hard work though. I will find the time zone info very useful when making plans for trips to Indiana.

Be thankful you don't live

Be thankful you don't live in Canada. I downloaded a database of their postal codes, and god help anyone trying to load it onto their GPS.

I'll try it anyway, because I'm bored, but over 750,000 Canada postal codes might be a bit too much for any GPS to handle. I have a way to cut it down, but I'll have to work at it.

Postal Codes, not Zip Codes

Unfortunately, Garmin decided to take ZIP Codes off the nuvi in my 775T on the 3.9 FW update.

However, the postal codes referred to by Strephon_Alkhalikoi are for Canadian postal codes, not the US. You can DL the POI file for the ZIP's.

First off we start our postal codes off with a Letter and they are 6 digits example mine is V5A 4G5. "Hit Where To?" then "Address" then "Change State or Country" then "Change Country" Type in Canada, should give you two options as soon as you put in the "c". Then type in the province and it will put you back into the "Change State or Country" Screen where you will see the postal code.

I know Garmin handles Canada Postal Codes but...

Just for the record, I was bored and the postal codes file is a huge one. However, I should be able to find out what city or town is attached to a Forward Sortation Area (the first half of a Canadian postal code) without having to know an entire postal code. I know that I have encountered instances where I've wanted to look at some place in Canada on the GPS and couldn't because it insisted on a whole postal code that I didn't know.

I think I'll keep doing this file simply to alleviate boredom. I also think I'll slip in an Easter Egg while I'm at it. wink

Postal or not, the new map still has my address wrong. As a matter of fact, punching in the address or even using the postal code which BTW you still need a house number gives me a location which does not exist. I'm not sure why it does that. I can google it and it finds me. Bin here for over 20 years and nothing has changed. Boggles my mind... laugh out loud

When I type in a Postal Code, I just skip the number if I don't have it, and it gives me what it has for the general area.

So, typing in 8710, I get 9200 Maple Grove Cres. But according to Google Earth, 8710 doesn't exist either... it just shows the intersection at Forest Grove.

Took less time than I thought.

Juggernaut wrote:

I got lucky, though despite my luck this file was very annoying. I'll explain.

1. I did a search for Canada Postal Codes and came across a link on the following page: http://drupal.org/node/255995 . The zip file I downloaded from one of the links on that page contained a CSV file that was set up for MySQL. The file itself once extracted from the zip file, turned out to be almost 60MB in size with over 750,000 entries in it.

2. The good news about the file is it had coordinates in the file. The annoying news was that the postal codes were complete, meaning not only the Forward Sortation Area but the Local Delivery Unit (the second half of the postal code) as well. There were a couple minor issues besides this, but those were related to the file being set up for MySQL and easily fixed.

3. There were a ton of false starts on this one. Using EPE was useless because trying to find the duplicates would have taken forever. It took a few tries in Excel before I hit on a combination to cut down the file, as I'm not as familiar with Excel as I am with Word. I used ASAP Utilities to strip the LDU from the file. After ASAP Utilities, I fixed the minor issues, then deleted all the duplicate entries. End result?

765,344 entries cut down to 7,660. A 99% decrease in the number of entries and an over 99% decrease in the file size (58MB to 387KB).

I did a test run of the file through Google Earth, though as of yet I've not loaded the file into my GPS. I'll test it properly later on today or sometime tomorrow before upping it to the site.
