NOT a Bluetooth update...

This is a GPS chipset update for the nuvi units based on the Garmin type B GPS chipset (-some- nuvi 2x0 units and all nuvi 5000 units). If your unit contains this chipset, it will be listed as an update when you run WebUpdater. If it's not listed, your unit either does NOT use the type B chipset or has already been updated. See the following (scroll down to the page bottom) for more info:

http://www.gpspassion.com/fr/articles.asp?id=259

If your unit had a Bluetooth update, it's because there just happened to be a Bluetooth update for your unit. This update is in no way related. The nuvi 7x0 series does not use the type B GPS chipset. They use either SiRFstarIII or MediaTek (MTK).

765T

says software is current. Where do you find out which chipset and software you have loaded. It is not under tools>settings>system>about.

The update hs is talking about here is for a non SiRFstar unit

"This is a nuvi Bluetooth update"

I got the 3.40 bluetooth update on my 760 more than 2 months ago.

The update he is talking about here is for the non SiRFstar GPS chipset equipped units. For the units with the SiRFstar chipset the most recent update is 3.00s and can be seen in my 760 at the About screen under System menu. If there is a "s" at the end of the GPS SW Version number that means you have the SiRFstar chipset.

Must be the same one Garmin sent me the other week.

I hope they have the updater fixed now, I had to manually update mine.

Sorry for the confusion - I saw that you had 7xx series units and was not under the impression that you were referring to the 2xx platform.

What does an "m" indicate? My 760 reads GPS SW 2.80m

I am @ firmware rev. 4.50.

Thx.

One of my posts above linked to a very informative page:
http://www.gpspassion.com/fr/articles.asp?id=259

Your unit uses the MTK v1 - MTK3318 (MediaTek) GPS chipset.

MTK3318

Thanks for answering, Mr Nimrod. Is this a "good" chip or the bargain basement version?

BTW, I'm really liking this 760. I've traveled about 150 miles so far. It doesn't seem to have any screen lag like the 360. Screen brightness is just excellent. Traffic feature looks very cool. It's a wonderful techno-gadget !!

.

The MediaTek is now considered the "good" high sensitivity GPS chipset as I believe the SirFstarIII is no longer being used by Garmin in any of their units.

The SirFstar also seemed to be overly sensitive with motion being registered (wandering) on the GPS even if you were not moving. The MediaTek does not seem to have that problem...you'll still see your position wander periodically but nowhere near as bad as the SirFstar did.

Dorkus,

thanks for the reply + info. I suspect this unit is hot off the assy line. Amazon was out of stock for a matter of weeks and then they got a large, fresh shipment in. I do not see the SirFstar name mentioned on the screen as the device boots and wondered if this unit had one of the "other" chips.

Does anyone know what this

Does anyone know what this update does?

When I turned mine on in my car, a banner was displayed that I read to say that the firmware was being updated to provide GPS Remote. I am not sure of the exact wording of the message.

Yep - They had it burried in the list and I overlooked it when I upgraded to the 4.6 FW.

Thanks for forcing me to look!
