Garmin Mapsouce

I'm sorry posting such nubish questions in advance but this is what led to them.

I bought my Garmin Nuvi 760 at Costco and it didn't come with any software. I kinda had to educate myself on loading poi's and updating the software on the device. I read somewhere that extra maps can be loaded on the 760 using Mapsouce.

The nubish questions are as follows:

What is Mapsource?
How can I get it?
What does it mean that maps have to be "unlocked"?
Does my unit (Nuvi 760) already have extra maps on it that have to be unlocked? or are they referring to some cd/dvd my unit should have been bundled with?

Sorry again if offended all the GPS Veterans out there but I just want to be able to create and/or load extra maps onto my 760 and I dont know how to go about it.

Mapsource

Mapsource is the Garmin package allowing you to view maps and set routes on the PC. Perhaps the easiest way to get the program is to call or write Garmin and ask for it. It will probably cost you $10 for the CD. Either that, or you wait until you want to update the maps and order them on DVD. You get Mapsource for free then.

It's downloadable also.

I do not know if there is a mac equivalent.

The GPSFileDepot also has many free Garmin-compatible maps that you can add to your nuvi.

Thanks for the link Sport Billy. I've noticed that there seems to be two variants of the Mapsouce software. I'm guessing there's a regular version and then the one with "City Navigator North America NT 2009" in it's name. Is there any difference ? or are these two separate software products?

Only one MapSource

MapSource is the front-end Garmin software that manages maps/waypoints/routes/tracks etc. City Navigator North America NT 2009 is a particular mapset that's used in conjunction with MapSource.

Thanks for the link CraigW. Would anyone know anything about this unlocking-of-maps business? Someone throw me bone here, I'm new on the GPS scene.

.

1. MapSource is a program that you use on your computer to create routes and Favorites and send them to your GPS unit. It can also be used to get data from the unit such as Favorites, Routes and Tracks. It is also used to send supplemental maps (those that you might purchase, download or create in addition to the preloaded ones) to your GPS unit.

2. You can get it by calling Garmin and asking for it. Since you have a unit that came preloaded with the maps, they will likely send it to you at no charge or for a small shipping charge. (Note that while it is possible to get the MapSource program by updating from the Garmin Training Center, this will NOT contain the City Navigator maps, so it's best to call Garmin.)

3. Many maps must be unlocked before they can be used. This includes the City Navigator maps which are already unlocked to your GPS unit. There are not any additional maps on your GPS unit that you can "unlock".

You can create your own maps, but it's a bit of work. Here are some places to start.

There is a wealth of information on the subject. Here's a little information to get you started.

Thanks for clearing that up DorkusNimrod.

Whoa Mama!!

Wow Motorcycle Mama, Thanks for such an in-depth answer and all those great links, you sure know your way around a gps. How did you get/made that cute caricature of yourself ? I'm new on these forums and have no picture of myself as you can see.
