Icons for Garmin's built-in points of interest files

Ok, please understand this ... I'm not asking the age-old question about how come the icons don't show up on my screen.

And I'm not asking how I add custom icons to my personal POI's uploaded by me.

I'm asking about the icons for the original Points of Interest files installed by Garmin on my new 260W.

I swear I've seen the appropriate icons on my screen before (the standard gas/food etc) ... but now for some reason, all I'm getting for the Original GARMIN-provided Points of Interest are little black dots with a white border.

For the life of me, I can't figure out how to turn the "standard" poi icons back on ... or if Black Dots is all I get ... again, I'm not talking about my custom POI files (those icons work great!)

I'm talking about accessing the icons for the Garmin provided points of interest that came with my 260w.

Where are they stored on the GPS? Did I somehow manage to delete them. Why am I only getting a block square in lieu of say, a fuel icon?

Everything's updated according to the Garmin updater. Unit came with 2009 maps. And I swear that one time, I actually saw ... in addition to the standard icons, a Walgreen's icon (and I've never loaded anything close to a Walgreen's.)

The "stock" icons for the "stock" POI files have to be stored somewhere.

Did I overwrite them? Delete them? I can't see how installing my own custom POI files and icon make any changes to how the "stock" POI icon display.

Wow!

This is one well written question, but you may have to wait awhile before/if anybody can come up with an answer. I have never seen or heard of the original icons disappearing for the built-in POIs. In fact, I would have thought it impossible to make that happen, especially since nobody knows a way to add to them or where they are stored. Good luck -- I'll be watching for a legit answer. You may have to go to Garmin on this one.

Nuvi 660 -- and not upgrading it or maps until Garmin fixes long-standing bugs/problems, and get maps to where they are much more current, AND corrected on a more timely basis when advised of mistakes.

You may want to contact Garmin seeing that this is their area of expertice (sp?)

Are they really gone?

or is the level of detail to far out? In other words have you "zoomed" in enough?

Zoomed in

Yes, I'm zoomed in far enough ... as I said, instead of the original icons, I'm now seeing black squares instead of the built-in icons.

I also see my "custom" loaded icons ... but not the built-in standard Garmin POI icons which have been replaced with black squares.

I've tried all levels of Map detail ... trying to see if that would make a difference. It doesn't.

As I said, the built-in icons have been replaced with black squares when I browse the map ... on a new-style 260W updated to current 4.6.

I did delete some unwanted voices, vehicles and help files ... but nothing remotely resembling english or icons.

Try reinstalling the files you took out and see what happens. Just a wild shot in the dark.

Missing Icons

You may want to run Web Updater and see if you can reload the files you deleted. If nothing else, a call to Garmin would be in order and they may be able to supply this inadvertently deleted data.

I have a 265 and went

I have a 265 and went through every setting and don't see anything about turning the internal icons on and off.I did go to where to,points of interests, shopping and touched Pharmacy/Chemist and found Walgreen's and touched it and did see the Walgreen's Icon. When you touch map at bottom it shows the icon on the navigation screen.Tested several other icons and got the same results. When you touch map do you still get the black box?Like the other members never seen a post on this before.

Walgreens

Charlie ... I followed your directions and yes, I saw the Walgreen's icon when going down the >go to>pharmacy>walgreens and then touching "map" ... and if I "set location" most of the stock POI's have icons and some just have just black squares.

Yet, if I simulate a route, that starts at home and takes me past a Walgreens ... the Walgreen icon is just a little black square (in the browse map mode).

Glad to see the Walgreens icon wasn't a figment of my imagine ... but I'm also confused as to why the icons display as black squares in the browse map mode.

I think it's a bug in the new 260W (really a 255w?) ... no icons display in the routing map (either 3d, track up or north up). And in the "browse map" mode ... only a few display with the rest being little black squares.

To be honest with you ... I don't mind the little black square. It does reduce the amount on clutter you see on the browse map.

But it makes it really difficult to see what the "stock" POI is ... you have to accurately touch the little black square to get the name to display.

Again people ... I'm not talking about custom POI's downloaded from here with custom ICONS. I'm talking about the default icons that come on the GPS.

I sincerely think GARMIN is trying to reduce the amount of clutter people see on the Browse Map.

Default icons

cbwatts

I simulated a route to Walgreen's located close to me.Using 3d mode all I got was the checkered flag when arriving to the location.I zoomed in on the location and still only got the flag.Knowing some banks and restaurants are in the same area.I put my finger on the screen and slide the map view over. The Walgreen's icon show along with a lot of others. Not the squares but ones like the fork and spoon etc.You could touch each one to get the name.

When using the custom pois I installed with icons they appear when I get close to the location plus any others I have located in the same area.No zooming at all.
