Refurbished Magellan Maestro 4250

shock Beware:: Do Not Buy Refurbished Magellan Maestro 4250 ::

I recently bought Magellan Maestro 4250 Refurbished from a known store. Guess What? It has older maps. I spent some $129 and change on the GPS, but the funny part was Magellan denied completely about updating the maps. They wanted me to update the maps by paying them $80.00 (Total = $129.xx + $79.99 = $209.xx) The warrant was for 90 days from the date of purchase!

Well, someone might say so what?? You cannot get GPS for this cheap!!

Well, now if you buy NEW Maestro 4250, it costs $199 and change. On top of that, it has One Full Year of Warrant (which you will need for Magellan) and Map updates are FREE because its Brand NEW!!!

So beware!! Do Not Buy Refurbished Magellan 4250 and only you will get is the Heart Ache!!!

And oh yes, did I mention the RUDE telephone support in the name of "Customer Support"???

Sorry you made a bad choice......

OK, feel better now that you have vented ??
The cheapest choice is not always the best one.

What leads you to believe that map updates would be free with a recently purchased "new" unit ??

Magellan Maestro 4250// MIO C310X

30 Days Free Map Update

From Magellan website:

"Magellan 30-Day Map Guarantee

Customers of a newly purchased Magellan Vehicle Navigation unit are covered by our 30-Day Map Guarantee. This guarantee allows customers who have purchased a new Magellan Maestro™ or RoadMate™ device to update the preloaded map in the unit free of charge if Magellan releases or makes available a newer map within 30 days from the date of customer's purchase.

Requirements and Restrictions:

* Shipping and Handling charges will apply
* Product registration is required
* Valid proof-of-purchase receipt is required
* Refurbished models and purchases from auction sites are not eligible."

I would return it

Mio (Miatac?) has bought Magellan apparently. I own a Mio and although it has performed well they have not done anything as far as map updates and such.

My first GPS, a Mio C220, came out with excellent reviews from professionals and users alike so I bought one. 4 months after I bought it they pretty much obsoleted it and nothing has been released. I actually decided to buy a Garmin because of this.

I would wait and see what the plans are for the combined company.

Just my $0.02!

It's a good thing that there's GPS systems or I would be ... always lost!

Is $180 for a new 4250 good deal?

I found a local store sells it for $180. Is this a good deal?

It Depends...

If you feel you need to get the latest available maps right now (and keep in mind they are already a year out of date) then yes that is a good deal.

I bought a refurbished unit, upgraded the AAA info via their web site, the firmware via the Magellan site. At some point I will update the maps, when Magellan puts them on sale again (see other posts in this section).

Just Got a Refurb 4250

I have just received a Maestro 4250 Refurb from Magellan as a warranty replacement for a Roadmate 800. I have to admit that so far I have not seen any of the issues that are ususally discussed about the 4250. But keep in mind that the Bluetooth Implementation is not the best, I have yet to be able to get any of my phones, new and older versions with Bluetooth, to work with the SMS Messaging, they all generate an error of incompatibility when it comes to the SMS feature.
The Power Button failure issue has also been brought up quite often and I have not experienced that at all.

One big plus, if you have AAA membership, you can get a second year extended warranty so if you have AAA check that out.

Last but not least, if they have an open box I would check and see what MAP Version is loaded., Even if you get a Brand New Unit, it will cost you $10 S and H to get the new Maps, even if the unit is 1 dau old. The MAPS are Identified as 31 in the USER OPTIONS then MAP INFORMATION area.

" But I have a GPS. It's easy, I just punch in your address and wait for your house to pull up!"

Thank You!!!

The purpose was to beware buyers and not venting... I never said that Magellan 4250 is not a good choice! If given the better customer support, Magellan 4250 would have been my first choice (for the primary reason of AAA services).

Thanks.

Fine for me

I picked up a refurbished unit for $119, and the maps are from 2007. This is 2 years newer than the maps I had on my old Roadmate 760, and are plenty new enough for me. So I actually came out ahead! I probably will not buy new maps until late in the year, when the next update comes out. The warning is a good one if you need the latest maps, but for me, nothing has really changed around here in the last couple of years.

Thanks for the warning anyway!! Many will be glad you did.
