Newbie with a Nuvi 760

So I thought I'd followed the directions here on downloading POI's (saved them to a folder on my hard drive, connected my gps, uploaded manually, etc. etc.). Anyway, I get the "Congratulations, you've downloaded ... POI", but when I check my favorites a couple of them have coordinates instead of the address and then I see alot of them that say "SPEED LIMIT _X MPH _x."

Help. What am I doing wrong?

Downloading POI

Let's step back and go back over the procedure one more time.

You created a folder and loaded the CSV files into the folder on your computer.

You ran POI Loader and told it to load the files in the folder to your 760 which was attached via a USB cable to the computer.

POI Loader told you there were XXX POI loaded successfully

Checking FAVORITES you see strange entries.

Did you look in Where To - Extras to see if the POI file is listed? This is where POI Loader puts custom POI.

If the POI files are listed under Extras, you may want to clean out the favorites as this is a different database that does not generate alerts.

Favorites can get loaded from some of the map programs such as Mapquest or Google Maps using the Garmin Communicator plugin. If you were playing around with one of these programs that may explain why you have strange entries in Favorites.

One word of caution on loading POI, load them all at once as every time you load a new file, the old one is overwritten.

Thanks a_user. So I

Thanks a_user.

So I checked in Favorites - extras and the POIs are there.

You recommend I clean out the favorites since you said this is a "different database". Do you recommend I clean out the favorites from these strange entries through my gps (directly) or through my computer which is hooked up TO my gps?

Wouldn't the POI's be shown on the map as I am driving by one (or in the vicinity of one)?

It just seems like I've done part of what I need to do.

thanks in advances.

What he meant

What he meant was that sometimes you can accidently add your poi's to your list of favorites. Since some units only have a 500 limit, you might have used up a bunch of them. You would want to remove them from your list.

It doesn't sound like you did that to me, so you are probably ok.

Custom POI's

The custom POI's you loaded would be found under where too then extras then custom POI's and not under favorites.

There are a couple ways of cleaning out your favorites, one is to do a reset and delete them all. The other way is to go in and delete each one using EDIT. This is the slow way as when you delete a favorite, it kicks you back to the home screen so you have to go through a couple of screens to get to the next favorite you want to delete.

It all depends on the amount of pain you want to inflict upon yourself - either reenter the favorites you want to keep including "home" or delete the individual entries. Garmin doesn't let you delete favorites from the computer that I'm aware of.
