Problem with WebUpdater?

Yesterday I attempted to check for updates for my 260W. Although the application WebUpdater (ver. 2.04) has worked flawlessly for me in the past, That time I got "Error communicating with Garmin server." Repeated tries yesterday and this morning receive the same message. Is it me or them??

Thanks in advance.

If you are running a MAC and you just updated your operating system that may be the problem, See this link:

There's a Problem

Called Garmin support. They said there is in fact a problem with WebUpdater running on OSX 10.5.6, a recent Mac update. They are aware and are working on a fix. In the meantime, if you update your Mac OS to 10.5.6, WebUdater will not work.

P.S. Thanks, rjrsw. You posted same time as I did.

Webupdater problems

Sometimes I will get the message that Webupdater is unable to find my device. Even though it is connected and Poiloader finds it with no problem. A few days later Webupdater has no problem. Probably just one of those many Windows anomalies.

I use to have that problem

I use to have that problem until I found out that if I connected the usb cable directly to the PC instead a usb hub, it work everytime.

Folks, We're Talking Macs

The problem first stated in this thread was concerning a Mac. Garmin folks have verified there is a problem with the Mac version of WebUpdater and are working on it.

PC users may or may not have had or be having a similar problem Fixes for Macs normally won't work for PCs and vice-versa.

Thanks for the input in any case.

No update from Garmin...

We're most likely waiting for January -- I'll but them at MacWorld.

No problems here

PC and no problems here.

And then there is the problem with the sd cards..

If you don't pull them out the pc won't recognize the 270... will the MAC?

Web Updater 2.0.4 and OS X 10.5.6

Both worked fine for me on an Intel iMac. No problems at all.

Updater

There are times when it’s a good idea to check with Garmin. I presume you’re using a Mac, and just updated to 10.5.6. If that’s the case, the Mac update has messed up the Updater and Garmin is working on a fix as we mess around here.

geochapman, it would be

geochapman, it would be great if Updater 2.0.4 actually works with OS X 10.5.6. Did you do anything special to get it to run? In what order did you perform software updates?

Well it works

I have an Intel iMac 24" running 10.5.6 and the Web updater 2.0.4 ran and worked without a hitch with no problems. I have no idea why anyone should have a problem. The OS X update to 10.5.6 was run from the Mac Software Update panel and I had no problem with that. As far as I can see, Garmin has no fixes to do. I do keep my permissions corrected on the Mac and run Cocktail to keep the caches etc clear. Apparently some don't believe me, but really I had no problem. George

Just Trying to Find Out Why

Geochapman, I was happy to read that all was working on your computer and was just trying to see if there was some reason Updater works on your computer and not on others. I also run Cocktaii regularly. It doesn't help this problem. I thought it might be a preferences file problem, thus asking what order you updated the OS and the Updater. I've thrown away the Updater's preference file--no improvement. Garmin says there is a problem with 10.5.6 and they are working on a solution. If your configuration works, and we could find out why, it might help solve the problem quicker.

Possible problems:

a) some offending preferences file
b) different computer hardware models (I'm running on a Mac Pro)
c) different GPS models (yours is 660, mine 260W)
d) software upgrade sequence
e) change in 10.5.6 that affects some systems (Garmin's assumption)
f) many other causes.

Have a great New Year!

I wonder if

As soon as I get time, I'll see if it works on my MacBook. I haven't tried that. It also has 10.5.6. I'm betting on a conflict with some other program or maybe a stray pref error. If you've thrown out upDaters prefs what about POI loader or Road Trip. I can't figure this out 'cause I went in expecting it not to work and it did. Of course Garmin would blame Apple and vice versa, they always do. Good Luck. George

PPC vs Intel the difference?

I have a G5 desktop that stopped letting WebUpdater work after the 10.5.6 update. I noticed the reports of it working come from Mac Intel users. Could the problem be with the PPC vs Intel processors?

New Observation

My MacBook which is brand new will run Updater and tell me no update is needed but when it tries to check for other updates it quits and gives me an Apple Error report which I could analyze if I knew about such, but I don't. So then I tried it on my iMac and repeated these results. Now the other day it ran the Updater on the iMac, did its thing and it worked fine. Nothing has changed on the iMac in the intervening time. Now I'm confused and take back my previous comments about there being no problem.

Isn't there a place a person can go to download the system software and install it without the Web Updater? I do feel the new update makes the Custom POI's work faster. It may be almost forever before Garmin finds the problem. Maybe if someone sends them the Apple report, they would understand it.

New Web Updater Available

Just to close this thread out properly, the new Web Uudater for Mac OSX 10.5.6 users is available on the Garmin web site. It fixes the problem. This has already been reported in another thread.
